Baines Montgomery

Montgomery, Baines "Monty" MADISON-Baines "Monty" Montgomery, age 83, died on Monday, November 10, 2008 surrounded by his family. He was born June 9, 1925 in Brownsville, Ala. to Taylor and Frances (Skelton) Montgomery. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1944. After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in Germany and France. Baines was discharged in 1946. While stationed at Truax Field he met Mary Vaughn of Madison. They were married on Apr. 9, 1948 in Louisville, Ky where he worked for International Harvester. In 1950, they returned to Madison where he enlisted in the Air National Guard. He served in the Korean War and remained in the National Guard until his retirement in 1984. Baines is survived by his loving wife, Mary; sons, David (Lynn), Robert (Carolyn) of Madison, John (Mary Giemza) of Milton; daughter, Frances (Scott) Petersen of Marshall; six grandchildren, Geoffrey and James Montgomery, Matthew (Crystal) and Christopher Petersen, Michael and Elizabeth Montgomery. He is also survived by his sister, Maria (Eugene)Bottoms of Crestline, Calif.; brother-in-law, John Paul (Donna) Vaughn of Sun Prairie; sister-in-law, Louise Poe of Mobile, Ala. and many other cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Shelby, Coker and Revis. Baines was a veteran of more than 40 years and a lifetime member of the Truax-Longmire VFW Post 8483 where he served as their Quartermaster for many years. He was also a member of American Legion Post 481. Baines enjoyed bowling for many years with a Tuesday night league and Friday morning Senior League. Dad always had something good to say about everyone. He was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather and a good helpful friend and neighbor. He will be dearly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, his family and friends and all who knew him. The family extends its appreciation to the wonderful and caring staff at the Ellen & Peter Johnson HospiceCare Center and all of the thoughtful and helpful people at HospiceCare Inc. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 11 a.m.on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens with military rights being conducted. Visitation will be held at GUNERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. pass in review by the VFW Post 8483. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Ellen & Peter Johnson HospiceCare Center. He was, as he often said, "American by birth and Southern by the grace of God."
