Obituary
MADISON-Carmen Elizabeth Burnett (née Hommedahl) died on March 24, 2016, in Madison. She was 82. Carmen was born at home on June 1, 1933, in Cannon Falls, Minn., to her parents, Melvin and Pearl Hommedahl. She graduated with a degree in Nursing from the Kahler School of Nursing in1954. Carmen married Dr. George Burnett in Wanamingo, Minn., in that same year. The Burnett's moved to Minneapolis where they lived briefly before moving to Madison in 1956. Carmen worked as a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital, and then for over 20 years for the American Red Cross, retiring in 1998. She particularly enjoyed travelling to small towns throughout southern Wisconsin with the bloodmobile. Carmen loved bluegrass music and was an early member of the Southern Wisconsin Bluegrass Music Association. She was proud of being a Norwegian-American and took several trips to Norway to visit relatives and see the places where her ancestors lived. Carmen had a warm smile, generous nature, and was supportive of family and friends in all sorts of endeavors. She will be dearly missed. Carmen is survived by her three sons, Stephen (Amy) of Lincoln, Neb., James (Sandra) of Fitchburg and Mark (Nancy) of Aiea, Hawaii; two sisters, Millie (Llewelyn) Erlanson and Lorraine (Tim) Timm; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her twin sister who died shortly after birth, Eunice; and her husband, George, who died in 1974. There will be a service to celebrate Carmen's life at GUNDERSON FITCHBURG FUNERAL HOME, 2950 Chapel Valley Road, Fitchburg, on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, take time to listen to music you love with good friends or family.

Our sincere sympathy for the family and many friends of a special lady, Carmen. As you well know, she was a treasure and lived life with conviction. We met her about 30 years ago through a mutual enjoyment of "bluegrass music". She encouraged a band my husband played with (as she did with many bands); and we came to know her better at an early festival we produced in Jacksonville, IL in the 80's. Her enthusiasm for bluegrass music was contagious; her encouraging words played a big part in our production of nearly 200 concerts and festivals in 5 states. Over the years our paths crossed many times; we shared "music" for more than 20 years at the International Bluegrass Music Associations trade shows where her smile and enthusiasm was so welcoming. She became like family to us and ours.
God truly blessed us when we crossed paths with this dear lady; one we are proud to call, "friend". Til we meet again.
