Obituary
MCFARLAND-Steve Barr, age 76, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016, after going into cardiac arrest. He was born on May 9, 1940, to Walter and Laura (Walker) Barr. Steve grew up in Monona and spent his childhood helping his father run Barr's Resort, a summer boat and cottage rental business on Lake Waubesa in McFarland that Steve's parents had owned and operated since 1936. Steve graduated from Monona Grove High School, where he was very involved with cross country, track and field, and basketball. He then attended UW-Platteville for a Bachelor of Education degree and graduated in 1963. Steve married his wife, Shirley Elizabeth "Teddi" (Forcum) on Nov. 8, 1964, in the Mount Morris Methodist Church. They settled in McFarland where Steve took teaching and coaching positions at James Madison Memorial High School on the west side of Madison in 1968. In 1972, they took over Barr's Resort. In 1962, Steve began officiating high school sports; basketball, football, track and field, and cross county. He also coached the latter two sports for many years. For nearly 55 complete years, Steve has officiated Wisconsin high school and college level track and field meets. His love for being a part of these sports earned him recognition at state and local Halls of fame. Additionally, the Madison Memorial Spartan Invite features what is known as the Steve Barr 8-Lap Classic 4x800 relay. Steve is survived by his son, Michael Barr; daughter-in-law, Kika; grandchildren, Brian (Melanie) and Debora and Marcus. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; and son, Thomas. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1358 Hwy. 51, Stoughton, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016. My sincere condolences to the Barr family I will never forget the BEST hug anyone could ask for at a chilly Track Meet! Such an amazing man who made my nearly 30 years in the world of T&F that much better just by knowing he was around and ready to offer up encouraging words and smiles to so many. You are loved by so many and will be dearly missed, Steve. Tara Franklin

Steve was a wonderful person, and a good friend of mine. I was with him on the first JMM Cross Country team he coached in 1970. Steve was always cheerful, and was very proud of his family. I will miss my phone calls with Steve. I will miss Steve. Sincerely, and with love, Dirk Seibold

My deepest condolences to the family and loved ones. I am a 1957 grad of MGHS and knew Steve through my brother, Dave Entwistle. I remember Steve as a great guy and a good friend to all he came to know, not only to my brother, who passed away in July of 2014, but to all his buddies. May time and your memories help diminish your pain. Rest well, Steve.

It was always reassuring to see Steve Barr officiating a track meet. He was knowledgeable and helpful to athletes and coaches. Everyone associated with him as a person and an official will miss him. He was a well respected teacher, coach, and official.
