Elaine Corning

MADISON/PARDEEVILLE/DODGEVILLE-M. Elaine Corning, age 94, passed away on Friday, Nov. 24, 2017, at Heritage Monona. She was born on July 25, 1923, the daughter of the late Curtis and Frances Chappell, in Dodgeville.  She was a graduate of Dodgeville High School and attended Spencerian Business College in Milwaukee where she met her husband, the late George Corning.  They were married in 1942 in Greenville, Texas, where George was stationed before going overseas in World War II. They started their family in Madison, but moved to Pardeeville, where they raised their boys. In the early 1970s, they moved back to Madison.  Elaine worked for the University of Wisconsin before retiring in 1990 to devote her time to their antique glassware business. They traveled the country where "Elaine's Glassics" was often the featured dealer at antique shows. Elaine was also an avid seamstress and made many of her own clothes just by looking at a picture in a magazine. In addition to making many of her own clothes, she loved making "girlie" clothes for her granddaughters. She also was active in the quilting group at Asbury Methodist Church, making blankets and quilts for hospitals and charities.  Elaine spent many hours with her hands in the dirt tending to her beautiful flower gardens where her rose bushes took center stage. She and George loved to travel, and visited most of the U.S.  They especially enjoyed visiting State and National Parks. They also were fortunate to have traveled to China and most of Europe.  Elaine is survived by her sons, Kent (Ellen) Corning, Gary Corning, Don (Lois) Corning and Doug (Deb) Corning. She is also survived by grandchildren, Greg (Jane) Corning, Kris (Kevin) Hermanson, Erin (Teresa) Corning, Courtney (Mel) Corning, Kendra (Jason) Farley, Ashley (Mike) Thomas, Melissa Corning and Austin (Emma) Corning; and great-grandchildren, Jordan (Megan), Mackenzie and Camryn, Arielle, Chandler, Cayden and Keegan, Bryce and Payton, Landon, Cash and Ella, and McKenna. Elaine is also survived by her sister, Lois Slaney of Dodgeville; and her brother, Harold (Katsie) Chappell of Sun City, Ariz; and by George's brothers and sisters.  She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, George.  Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, at 12 noon on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017.  Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday.  Burial will immediately follow at Forest Hill Cemetery on Speedway Road in Madison.  The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice and Heritage Monona for their wonderful care and support during this difficult time.   Memorials can be made to Alzheimer’s Association in her name.  Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
