Obituary

MADISON – Mix four sisters, several uncles, children and cousins, butter, sugar, eggs, flour, salt, chocolate chips and more, and you get more than just the annual family cookie day. You get a family that plans frequent outings, canoeing on the Wolf River, picnics on the beaches of Lake Michigan, ski trips to Upper Michigan, casual get-togethers and daily drop-ins at houses throughout the years. Marcy Linder was a wife, mother, grandmother, “gimlet” sister, best friend, aunt, great aunt, a second mom to many, a physical therapist, a skier, a baker, a sewist, a teacher and so much more to so many people. On Wednesday, July 24, 2019, Marcy Linder, loving wife and mother of three children, passed away at the age of 79. Marcy was born on April 5, 1940, in Random Lake, Wis., to Al and Marie (Lesch) Wetor. She earned her master’s degree and Bachelor of Science degree in physical therapy from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., in 1962, and she worked as a physical therapist for 35 years throughout Wisconsin. On May 2, 1964, she married John Linder at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Dacada, Wis., increasing her circle of family to include John’s siblings and spouses, Rita and Gordon Helm, Charles "Chuck" and Arlene Linder, and Rosalyn and Tom Jacoby and all their children and grandchildren. They raised two daughters, Wendy and Kim, and one son, John “Jack.” Marcy had a passion for her family. Her family’s tight bond was admired by many people who knew them. She was a second mom to all of her nieces and nephews. She loved to travel with her husband, John, visiting Paris, Zurich, India, Africa, Alaska, the Panama Canal, Russia, China and many trips around the U.S. with family and friends. Marcy was also an avid reader, participating in numerous book clubs. She volunteered for years at the American Girl warehouse sale and was an active member of the local chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization. Marcy loved to be on the water with her husband John in their boat when they lived on Random Lake, Little Lake Wissota and Lake Mendota. She always had the best dress-up box at her house, and she always made the kids and cousins wear seatbelts in the 1970s when it wasn't mandatory. Marcy was a gracious hostess for family get-togethers, holiday celebrations and the family’s annual Cookie Day festivities every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. She enjoyed celebrating the birthdays, anniversaries, milestones and successes of her family and closest friends. She had a talent for making one feel special and making parties festive and pretty. She was known for her generous spirit, kind heart, and cookies. Marcy is survived by her husband, John; their three children, Wendy, Kim (Tom) Buckoski and Jack (Nancy) Linder; grandchildren, Grayson, Gina, Katie, Emma, Owen, Darren, Malcolm and Ruby; sisters Mary Ann (Roger) Hammes, Madelon Wetor and Ruth (George) Alt; brother-in-law, Chuck (Arlene) Linder; sister-in-law, Rosalyn Jacoby; nieces and nephews; and many friends near and far. She was preceded in death by her father, Al; her mother, Marie; brother-in-law, Tom Jacoby; sister-in-law, Rita Linder Helm; brother-in-law, Gordon Helm; and granddaughters, Erin and Elle Deprey. A funeral service will be held at ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5001 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, 2019. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m until the start of the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Marcy’s memory to Outreach for World Hope, Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) Wisconsin State Chapter, St. Peter Catholic Church or an appropriate charity of your choosing. I have a few favorite memories of Marcy. I remember as a little girl John And Marcy returning from a trip to Italy and bringing me back a mosaic pin in the shape of a violin. I still have the pin today. I also remember many sleepovers at her home in Belgium before she had kids. We would always play a competitive game of Monopoly and eat popcorn. In 1969 I remember Marcy waking us to see the first man landing on the moon; I am forever grateful. She was always encouraging her nieces and nephews to visit and making sure to visit us too. When Sam was born in 1991 she came to visit and help me with the baby. I remember her making many frozen meals that I could easily throw in the oven. Marcy was always trying new recipes. .One time when we came for dinner in Chippewa Falls, Marcy made a flourless chocolate torte and forgot to add the sugar. We knew it was bad when we looked down the table and saw Jake, about 2years old at the time, scraping it off his tongue. Marcy jumped up and swept the dessert off the table. We laughed so hard and still chuckle about that memory today! The most recent new food recipe that I got the chance to sample visiting in May was corn chowder soup and it was delicious! She also had a knack of making birthdays and anniversaries special. I remember her including us in her 40 year wedding anniversary celebration to Wisconsin Dells. She was very generous and liked to bring the family together for these special occasions. Marcy was very well read, a good communicator, opinionated and interesting. I will miss our lively conversations. She was a fantastic aunt with a beautiful heart and a very cute name. I will forever remember with love, my aunt Marcy Linder💕

I remember when we were young and would go by grandma Linder and bake all Saturday morning. Aunt Marcy and all the sister in laws and all of us cousins made the best homemade donut rings during these times. I also loved how Aunt Marcy would invite all of us no matter what to celebrate birthdays every summer. No matter what she always remembered and sent out birthday and anniversary cards. I often thought did she fill them out every year and have them ready to go. She never would miss a beat when it came to that. When they lived on the lake in Random Lake we spent many days back and forth at our houses. Many memories of playing games and especially monopoly that we would play for days when we stayed by her and uncle John. It would be a marathon game. She will be sadly missed by all of us. She was the circle to our families and always would call and check in on all of us. Love you always... Jane Thome

Marcy and I met in the summer of 1961 at St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan. We worked as aides in the rehab department prior to our senior year at our respective schools, Marquette and UW-Madison.. The next spring Marcy invited me to bunk in the big old house she shared with a number of other Marquette students.as I began an internship at Curative Workshop in Milwaukee. After graduation Marcy, Karen and I continued our friendship as Physical Therapists at the VA and as roommates on 34th and Wells in another big old house. For the next year we worked hard, partied a bit (we remember the green lights at the work party in our apt. living room and getting stuck in the mud at another work party at a co-worker’s cottage), shot pool and danced at Manthy’s on 35th Street. I think the names of John and Jim were frequently mentioned by Marcy and me. I married in 1963 with a wonderful send off from my roommates, Marcy followed the next spring. Our families grew and our activities were more family- centered: side by side cottages in the North woods with fond memories of the Jolly Good Seven, a trip to the Smoky Mountains, long weekends at the Linder home in Random Lake and visits to us when we lived in Springfield IL, gatherings at one another’s special family events. Marcy and John are Jeff’s godparents. Wendy and Laurie are best friends. Christmas time brought a houseful of kids and adults as we gathered at one another’s homes often with Karen and her family as well. In time as our children grew up our gatherings became just the four of us sharing a meal at each other’s homes (Marcy was a great cook and pie maker) and enjoying a game of cards or dominoes. Through it all our friendship has remained strong and I will miss her deeply. I’m grateful for having a friend like Marcy—so many shared memories, good conversations, fun times. Who knew a summer job could yield all of that.
