MADISON - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Wayne Layton Wittenberg, M.D., Ph.D., at the age of 69. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and esteemed neurosurgeon, who passed away on January 9, 2025, with his family at his side. Dr. Wittenberg’s remarkable career as a neurosurgeon, his dedication to his patients, and his generosity to those around him, will always be remembered.

Wayne was born October 4, 1955, in Dayton, Ohio, as the oldest of three children and the son of Layton J. Wittenberg, Ph.D., a nuclear chemist, and Mildred Melsean Wittenberg, a dietitian. Wayne was a proud Eagle Scout, and his scouting adventures were a huge part of his childhood. Upon graduating as Senior Class President from Belmont High School (Dayton), Wayne’s passion for science led him to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a B.S. in Chemistry in 1978 as part of the honors program and Phi Beta Kappa society. Wayne obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois-Champaign Urbana (1984). His interest in medicine and healing inspired him to continue his education at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, where he earned his M.D. degree (1986).

The challenging nature of neurosurgery, combined with Wayne’s fascination with the mind, influenced him to complete the Neurosurgery Residency Program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. His medical practice took him across the country, from the mountains of Colorado to the shores of Florida, to South Dakota, where he served as Chief of Neurosurgery. Wayne was a brilliant scholar and an educator who worked earnestly to improve the lives of patients and their families.

Beyond his professional achievements, Wayne had innumerable passions and talents, including boating, hunting, hiking, and skiing, and multiple scholarly interests such as astronomy, languages, literature, art, and history. Wayne was a dedicated steward of the land, involved in the Boating Squadron and the Madison Astronomical Society, while also being an avid member of the Masons, Jesters, and Shriners.

More importantly, Wayne was a loving and devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Kleinke Wittenberg; his children, Barbie Wittenberg, Greer Wittenberg, and Seth Uschuk; and his younger sisters, Laurel Hunt (Terry) and Melsean Wittenberg. His grandchildren, Bailey and Andrew Uschuk, were the light of his life, and his love for his family knew no bounds. His unwavering support, resilience, and warmth will remain a cherished part of their memories.

Dr. Wittenberg will be deeply missed. His legacy of generosity, expertise, and dedication to his profession and family will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dr. Wittenberg and his family are incredibly grateful to Dr. Steve Howard of the Carbone Cancer Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the wonderful staff at Attic Angel, and Agrace HospiceCare with special acknowledgment to Alie, RN, and Bailey, social worker.

The family asks that you spend time with those you love. A time for remembrance will be held Saturday, January 18, 2025, at CADIEU FUNERAL HOME, located at 549 10th Ave., Menominee, MI 49858. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., followed by a service. May his soul rest in peace.
