Obituary
STOUGHTON - Alfred "Bud" Nelson, age 84, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2025, at home. Bud was born on October 18, 1940, in Duluth, Minn., to Ernest and Elnora Nelson. He lived in many different places in the states since his birth. His family settled in Marshall, Wis., where he graduated from high school.
After high school, Bud joined the U.S. Army and served as Military Police, stationed in Paris, France. In France he met Grethe Moller, his wife of over 60 years. Bud, an American citizen and Grethe a Norwegian citizen, with permission of their respective countries, were married in France in 1964 and eventually settled in Stoughton, Wis.
He was a man who wore many hats during his work life. He owned or worked at several full-service gas stations, was an owner operator semi-driver and retired from Stoughton Trailers.
Bud and Grethe enjoyed travelling and spent many Februarys in New Mexico and Arizona to escape the Wisconsin winter. Bud enjoyed many fishing trips with his "brother" cousin in Minnesota and later with his grandson and other friends. He loved those trips and was hoping for one more trip, that will have to be in heaven.
He will be remembered by his sense of humor, his grace when losing cribbage games, and his sound advice offered when requested. He was always willing to give a hand to a neighbor or friend who needed his help. He mowed a lot of lawns, cleared a lot of snow and did a lot of household fixes for many people over the years. He also enjoyed woodworking in "Bud's Mancave" and made numerous gifts for his family and friends. He loved spending time and helping out at the Langer farm in Marshall. His last "harvest" was only a few months ago.
Bud is survived by his wife, Grethe; daughters, Karen (Dave Vernig) Knipfer and Kristin (Jeff) Peterson; grandchildren, Richard (Paige Walker) Knipfer, Tucker Peterson and Shad Peterson; and great- grandchildren, Chloe and Elliott Gavney. He is also survived by his favorite nephew, David (Audrey) Vance. Bud was also a big dog lover. He will be missed by his granddogs, Houston and Maddie. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Irene Bailey; and grandchildren, Joshua Gavney and Nick Peterson.
A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1358 Highway 51 N. at Jackson St., Stoughton, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2025. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. A private family burial will follow the service.
