Obituary

OREGON - Janice Louise Freis (née Berglin) passed away peacefully after a brief illness on August 11, 2026. Born on June 9, 1953 in Daggett, MI, Janice was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose greatest joy came from the people she loved.

Jan shared 53 wonderful years of marriage with her husband, Darrell Freis. The couple was married on July 7, 1973 in Stephenson, MI, and built a life filled with love, family, and countless cherished memories.

A loving mother of two children and proud grandmother of seven grandsons, Jan treasured every moment spent with her family. She especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s games and cheering them on from the sidelines. Her family was the center of her world, and she will be remembered for the love, encouragement, and warmth she gave so freely.

Jan found happiness and peace in tending to her flowers and plants, enjoying the beauty she helped create and sharing that beauty with those around her.

Jan is survived by her loving husband of 53 Years, Darrell; her two children, Derek (Dakonya) Freis and Katie (Zain) Heitz; seven grandchildren, Carston, Brant, Trevyn, Declan and Nolan Freis, and Greyson and Jaxon Heitz; brother, Bob (Shelly) Berglin; and sister-in-law, Cheri (Tim) Leiphart. She is further survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and many loving friends.

Her memory will live on in the many moments of love, laughter, and togetherness she created throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elaine and Herman Berglin; mother and father-in-law, Ann and Louis Freis; and brother and sister-in-law, Don and Tracy Freis.

A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON OREGON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1150 Park St., Oregon, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026. Janice’s wishes were to not have a formal funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Interfaith Food Pantry of Portage County where Jan and Darrell were faithful volunteers. Mail to: Interfaith Food Pantry, P.O. Box 72, Plover, WI 54467.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, family, and devotion that will be cherished for generations to come.

Janice was a special cousin to me. We have talked over the years, always enjoying our conversations. She became more like a daughter to me in the last couple years. Am praying for her family.

My condolences to Darrell and family. I remember Janice from St. Stephen’s church in Stephenson: choir and other activities. And we were both cheerleaders while going through high school. I remember her as being very pleasant ALWAYs…a great smile and so friendly. While it’s difficult to smile right now, trust me when I say that eventually your memories will bring you a smaller or laugh and not so much pain. Sincerely Peggy Saltz Vaughn.

Jan was such a great friend! Jan took me under her wing after I joined our church. We talked most Sunday mornings and she was always so caring and generous! I will miss her.
