Obituary

MADISON - Katherine Ann Kaltenberg, “Kay,” beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, family member and friend was called to Heaven by our Lord Jesus on April 24, 2026.

Daughter to Florence and Ambrose Cox, Kay was born in Madison on July 26, 1946. She attended Edgewood High School, graduating in 1964. Some of Kay’s pastimes in her younger years included spending time at her parent’s summer house on Lake Wisconsin and enjoying softball and bowling leagues. She worked at JRW’s, a bar owned by her brothers John, Bob, and Bill, and there she met her future husband, John. They were married on May 6, 1972, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church.

Kay spent 41 years as a meter-maid for the City of Madison. Kay was a devoted member of Luther Memorial Church in Madison and taught Sunday School there for several years. Her faith continued as a priority and focus throughout her life. In addition to her devotion to the church, Kay demonstrated her generosity through her consistent donations of blood to the Red Cross.

When she was not working, she enjoyed spending time with her family at “The Land” on the Wisconsin River and being with her family at the cabin on the lake up north. Along with her love for the outdoors, Kay enjoyed sewing and crocheting, reading, exercising, enjoying a glass of wine (or two!), thrifting with sister, Carol, doing yardwork, and playing “Words with Friends.”

Above all things, Kay deeply loved and cared for her children and grandchildren. Kay always had her family in mind; from birthdays and holidays, to regular daily check-ins or video calls, her love was abundant. She profoundly cherished her entire family’s love, support and care throughout her life. We will all miss the energy, love, and friendship from the best “Grandma” and “Nana” ever.

Kay’s love was contagious and unconditional. Her genuine kindness left people feeling treasured and valued, while leaving a lasting impression on all she met.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Florence and Ambrose; father and mother-in-law, John and Doris Kaltenberg; sisters-in-law, Kristi Kaltenberg, Vicki Perzentka, and Pat Cox; and brother-in-law, Lance Haas. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, John; children, John “Joseph” III (Lisa), Amanda (Kelly-Rose) and Matthew (Adam); along with her grandchildren, Autumn, John “Joseph” IV, Elijah and Vivian. Kay is also survived by siblings, John (Pat), Bob (Sally), Bill (Elli) and Carol (Jim).

A celebration of life will be held at LUTHER MEMORIAL CHURCH, 1021 University Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026. A luncheon will follow at THE EAST SIDE CLUB, 3735 Monona Drive, Madison, at 12:30 p.m. A visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2026, and at the church on Friday, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Kay always had a smile. Especially after she delivered a quick witted zinger back at Robin. We had several fun trips with Kay and John. One of my fondest memories was going to Nashville where Kay danced non-stop. We spent many Super Bowls at John and Kay's. She was always a great host. I will miss our texts about Wordle and our competition. We'll see you in heaven. Michele and Robin

Kay at work was fun to talk to. She always had a smile on her face. I always enjoyed our conversations. As an officer I usually tried to stay close to her location if I was assigned in her area, but i quickly realized, she didn’t need me because she handled herself admirably with those unruly people she sometimes had to deal with. She was a little Lady but packed a lot of punch for sure. We never socialized after work but I wished I had. May God Bless you Kay. May the perpetual light alway shine on your soul.
