Obituary

MONONA - William Charles White passed away on April 30, 2026. Bill was a man whose accomplishments are measured not by what he took from life but by what he gave to it. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration and utilized it to excel and advance his career. He always looked for work that was challenging, but most of all provided a sense of accomplishment. He strived for excellence in all that he pursued, but the typical benchmarks of success meant far less to him than the evolution of his character. How he interacted with the world around him and the love he extended to his family and friends set his course. He sought by example to share his commitment to integrity, honesty, kindness, compassion and faith. He radiated these values with a humble smile and genuine search for the goodness in everyone he met. With no sense of being overtly directed, people left his presence with a feeling of peace. If Bill sought any enduring legacy, it was that this gift would persist in those whose lives he touched. He never felt the need to say anything about his material achievements. He led by example.

By experience, he mastered the elements necessary for a life of purpose and sharing. He loved walking, hiking, skiing, windsurfing, and fishing (catch and release only) from his kayak. In all of these pursuits, he followed the rhythms of nature in each season of the year. His astonishment in watching an eagle rise from the shore and soar above his fishing boat was the kind of silent miracle to which he was attuned and gave sublime meaning to his life. He followed the wandering curiosity of his dog, Sam, with childlike joy. The shortest conversation with a stranger about the beauty of the afternoon could engage both as deeply as a long conversation with a cherished friend by the fire on winter day. The “environment” was not an abstract concept for Bill; it was the outward expression of his soul. His engagement was infectious. Bill complemented these explorations with an abiding interest in music and art. He played the piano and guitar, and he became a highly accomplished draftsman with an enduring interest in portraiture. Like his adventures outdoors, these pursuits were a celebration of spontaneous creativity.

It was in this setting that he met his wife, Toni, just two short years ago. Bill recognized at once a kindred spirit, a person who shared all his values and lived with the same engagement and humility so important to him. Together they managed a lifetime of adventure in the compressed few months they had together. It was an exploration of love, wonder and soulful connection with the world around them. No exotic travel required. Bill reached a state of equanimity rare for a person at any time of life. He was as fulfilled in this relationship as any person could be.

Bill’s parents were Edith and Robert White, who instilled in him the values of respect and purpose that carried him through life. In addition to Toni, Bill is survived by his brother, Tom (Lenora); and sisters, Sue (Charles) Moelter and Judy (Dan) Johnson. Each of them has been profoundly influenced by Bill’s character and the example he provided for how to live with simplicity, courage, and grace.

You captured Bill and his warmth beautifully in his obituary. Bill was a great friend whose patience knew no boundaries. I miss knowing he’s fishing and golfing. You will be missed.

Bill was our neighbor and one of the best you could ask for. Always with a smile and calm demeanor and a hand raised in Hello. We and he helped each other with what ever was asked. We also helped with Sam if he was going to be gone. We will miss him and his neighborly ways. Rest in peace, Bill. Jerry and Linda DuBois

I am Toni’s neighbor on Oakridge Avenue, and I remember the story about how they met (thank you, doggies!). I also remember seeing how happy they were together—truly a blessing. And I remember seeing Bill tear up when he told me his dog Sam had died. Bill was special.
