MADISON - With sorrow, we announce that after a brief illness, Karen Elizabeth Muench, 84, passed away on January 17, 2026, in Madison, Wis., with family and friends at her side. Of German and Czech descent, she was born in Green Bay, Wis., on September 5, 1941, to Elizabeth (Kaftan) and George Muench.

Karen was a strong-willed woman of formidable intellect who lived her life entirely on her own terms. As a scholar, Karen earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1963 and later achieved her Ph.D. in Adult Education in 1985. She was a woman who navigated obstacles with a singular, often relentless, focus, regardless of the personal cost. Following her doctoral studies, she taught in the 1990s and early 2000s in the Education and Human Services department of UW-Oshkosh, where she was known for her dedication to her students’ success and her academic focus on women’s issues. Sheila Kain, a student from her early years of teaching at the UW Oshkosh, and who became a lifelong friend, says "she was so genuine, authentic, intelligent, good-humored, and an inspiration to all who knew her."

In 2002, Karen retired and relocated to Silver City, N.M., where she built a home on land outside of town with an expansive view of the Kneeling Nun rock formation. There she flourished as a watercolor artist. Her highly fanciful work, created in a whimsical, folk-art style, began as an emotionally healing outlet during her tenure at UW-Oshkosh, where her first exhibition was titled “Living My Life Out Loud.” In New Mexico, her subjects mostly centered on the wildlife and native symbols of the Southwest, with quail and roadrunners being frequent in her work. Bright yellows, oranges, and reds often dominated the color palette. Additionally, she painted colorful turtles inspired by snorkeling in Hawaii, merging striking blues and greens with bright, warm, colors. Alongside other artists, she co-founded the Copper Quail Gallery in downtown Silver City, and her work earned numerous prizes in local exhibitions, and was displayed in several galleries.

Her property survived a 2010 grass fire that burned nearby houses to the ground. She prioritized bringing back birds, rabbits, and javelinas, leaving ample water and birdseed to entice them back to the reviving bushes surrounding her home. Her friends and family remember quiet evenings watching the sun set while grilling outside under her ramada, and watching the flames in her kiva fireplace in the winter months. Karen remained active her entire life, and loved hiking, being out on the water, and exploring new things. To her nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, she was a beloved figure with an open ear, known for sharing gifts of her art, feathers, or stones found on her walks. She travelled extensively in her senior years, going to central Mexico for three weeks to learn Spanish in her 70s. She also visited the Galapagos islands, Hungary, and Croatia, buying coin purses and small local treasures to give to family members back home.

Karen is survived by her adult child, BJ Allen; her grandchildren, Jennifer Hage and Jeffrey Hage; her brother, James Muench (Kay); and her sisters, Janet Christensen (Niel) and Marilyn Schairer (John); nieces and nephews, Heidi Tureck (Sean), Doug Muench (Laurie), Wade Muench (Tanya), Eric Christensen (Liz), Jeff Christensen (Gaby), Kathy Sewell (Jim), Suzanne Olajos (Arpad), and Kayrn Schairer; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Michele Lee Hage, who took her own life in 2010, a loss that remains a deeply difficult chapter in the family’s history.

Karen’s life was a masterclass in persistence. She taught those around her to go after what they wanted, regardless of the hurdles in their path. Her family acknowledges the fullness of her life and the lessons she left behind. Karen hoped that in grief, friends and family members do good deeds in her memory.

The family held a small burial ceremony at the Natural Paths Sanctuary in Verona, Wis., on February 5, 2026. A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2026 in Madison, Wis.
