Obituary
Robert Charles Mirshak - beloved husband, father, teacher, and musician - passed away peacefully of natural causes on January 16, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born in Rockford, Ill., to Harold and Anita (Cannella) Mirshak, Robert lived a life defined by devotion: to his family, to his students, and to the enduring power of music.
Robert earned his bachelor's degree from Milton College and his master's degree in music from Northern Illinois University. In 1964, he began what would become a remarkable 30-year career as choral director at Middleton High School. Starting with a single small choir, he built the program into six thriving ensembles, produced countless musicals, and led performances across the United States. Under his leadership, Middleton choirs earned numerous state and district honors, including a record number of first-place awards, and the prestigious Midwest Record of the Year. In 1997, Robert received the Morris D. Hayes Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to choral music in Wisconsin.
Beyond the classroom, Robert founded and directed the Middleton Civic Choir, leading performances at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Middleton and six unforgettable tours throughout Western and Eastern Europe. He also served as choir director at Middleton Community Church and coached both Little League and Legion baseball, offering young athletes the same encouragement, discipline, and care.
A proud member of the National Guard, Robert was a man of integrity, discipline, and strength. Though he demanded excellence, he cared deeply for those he taught and led, firmly believing that music was a lifelong gift - one that shapes character, builds community, and connects people across generations.
Robert is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Carol Ann (Schliem) Mirshak; his son, Robert (Jane) Mirshak; and his daughter, Lori (Pat) Hilgers. He is also survived by Lori's stepson, Aaron Hilgers (Callie); extended family, former students, and countless friends whose lives were enriched by his teaching and his love of music. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Anita Mirshak; and his brother, Tom Mirshak.
A proud resident of Middleton for more than six decades, Robert's influence reached far beyond the classroom and concert hall. His legacy lives on in every song sung, every lesson remembered, and every life touched by his generosity of spirit. He will be remembered not only for his remarkable talent, but for the joy, humor, and compassion he brought to every rehearsal, game, and gathering.
A celebration of Robert's life and music will be held at MIDDLETON COMMUNITY CHURCH, 645 Schewe Road, Middleton, on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 12 p.m., with visitation beginning at 9 a.m.
