Obituary

BARNEVELD - It is with broken hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Jim Meives. He was the glue of our family. He was a constant source of love, laughter, and support whose absence leaves a void that can never be filled.

To know him was to know compassion, quiet generosity, and a contagious laugh that could brighten anyone’s day. He had a calming presence and a beautiful way of helping others without ever seeking recognition.

Jim was an owner/partner of Chula Vista Cheese Company/V&V Supremo for 30 years. He was a Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker and won numerous awards for his cheese.

Jim was a die-hard Packers fan, history buff, and Jeopardy whiz. He also took great joy in riding his gator around his land. Jamaica was his happy place. He loved his dog, Snoopy, with his whole heart.

On March 1, 1984, Jim married the love of his life, Mary Lehner, in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. Together they built a life full of laughter, love, and family. He was a proud and loving father to Alex, Tony, and Maria-always showing up for his kids in both the everyday and the extraordinary. Of all the roles he played, being a grandfather was the one he cherished most. His grandkids were his greatest joy. We are learning how to live in a world that no longer makes sense without him.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Garnetta; his brother, Rocky; his son, Alex; his niece, Cathie; and his nephew, Justin.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his children, Tony and Maria; and his cherished grandchildren, Emery, Rhett, and Charlie. He is also survived by his siblings, Kama (Mike), Priscilla (Steve), and Mark (Nicole); and his nieces and nephews, Jason, Christina, Jeremiah, Rebekah, Bobbie Jo, Alison, Benjamin, Steve, Ryan, Wesley, Michelle, and Rockford. He leaves behind many great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.

A funeral service will be held at EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 315 E. Main Street, Mount Horeb, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2025, with Pastor Kevin Cernek presiding. A luncheon will follow. A visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. All who knew and loved Jim are welcome to attend and share memories.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or The Salvation Army. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

I met Jimmy a long time ago when he and Mary asked me to babysit their kids for them. He was always there with a smile on his face. He was a great father to his awesome kids. I could have asked Jimmy for anything and if he could it would have happen. I love this family like my own. Sending hugs and prayers to Mary and Maria and Tony. You have an angel looking over you and your families.

I am so grateful that God allowed us to be born in the same family as cousins. I remember all the family gatherings, sledding, our annual summer visits from Virginia to see you and Mary (and little Maria) on The Square. Making sure to load up on the best cheese ever!!! (And looking for your Blue Ribbons at The Wisconsin State Fair). Later introducing you to my husband Glenn, who said, I just hit it off with Jimmy right away! We could talk about any subject.” (Didn’t anyone who met you felt that way?) Sitting in your living room, at the farm, laughing and talking so much that neither of us could get a word in edgewise, validating these 2 youngest cousins in the lineage inherited “the Moyer gift of Gab.” Words cannot express how much we will miss you Jimmy. God knew you were ready to head home, but we did not. To a perfect example of a man described in The Bible, you ran life’s race well to the end. (2 Timothy 4:7 , Hebrews 12:1-2 ) Love you and miss you!!!

I'm so so sorry for your loss. Jim was the best boss I ever had, a good friend to my family and one of my favorite clients when I was a travel agent. I'm glad to have known him.

Jimmy and I met at a DU meeting in 1986. We both loved duck hunting and fast became friends!!! We got together a lot. We enjoyed going to Vegas and Jamaica often! Jimmy was a kind and generous person who helped out a lot of poor people in Jamaica!!! There are lots of people there shedding tears for their loss!

I met Jimmy when married to Jeremiah, his nephew. During the entire time I was married to him, we both loved and respected Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Mary. I am so very sad to hear this. After my divorce, I went to the Madison Farmers Market to buy cheese from them and they always accepted me. I don't know what happened but he and your family will always be remembered fo day by me. All the trips to Jamaica. You were the best of the best.

I met Jim probably in 1987 when my Dad Frank Ernst sent me out to Chula Vista to install a water heater, He helped me buy his Father in laws big blue van with a wheel of cheese painted on the side. Jim was the best mentor I could of had. Ed Ernst
