STOUGHTON / RICE LAKE - Orvin Lawrence “Orv” Olson, age 88, of Stoughton, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at Kettle Park Senior Living. He was born on August 1, 1936, on the family farm, three miles south of Grandview, Wis., the son of Edwin and Mabel (Anderson) Olson.

At age 16, Orv graduated valedictorian from Drummond High School in 1953. After high school, he worked several odd jobs and was a member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard. In 1958, he enrolled at UW-River Falls. On February 13, 1960, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Chapin.

Just before his senior year, 1961, was to begin, the Guard was activated, the Berlin Crisis, and he was train-bound to Fort Lewis, Washington for the next year. He received his undergraduate from UW-River Falls in 1963 and his master’s degree from UW-Superior in 1974.

Orv taught math at Rice Lake High School from 1963-1993. During his career, he coached basketball, baseball and was the athletic director. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with family, woodworking and watching basketball, baseball and football. He was also known around the country for his expertise in collectable firearms, specializing in Winchester, Browning and Colt Sauers.

I walked into RLHS in the Fall of 1968, and Orv was already a beloved teacher and coach. For the next 57 years he was my Coach, my Mentor, and my dear friend. You could always count on Orv’s wry grin and good humor, his sound guidance, along with great coaching on executing the hard dribble and quick step for a basket in the post! The Roman philosopher Seneca said it best: “The comfort of having a friend may be taken away, but not that of having had one.” We will miss having Orv here as our friend, but all the great memories will stay with us. So many wonderful memories! His was the first wedding I was allowed to attend. I was only four! I babysat his boys, they were more like my little brothers! He was my Algebra teacher, first time I ever understood Math! He went fishing with my dad, and my sons. Farewell sweet cousin!

Orv was my high school baseball coach first as an assistant coach and thenhe bbecame head coach in 1966 my senior year. The retunring players were a bit anxious as he was replacing a long time coach who had retired. He put us at ease and led us to an undefeated season, the first in years, before losing in the regional tournament. The team enjoyed playing for him and his assistant Ted Olson. A good and fair coach, respected by all. My condolences to the family. Tom Koepp RLHS class 66
