Obituary
MIDDLETON - The passing of our cherished Jeanette is something we share with deep sadness and profound love. To know Jeanette was to know a woman who laughed fully, had stories to tell of hardships overcome, listened empathetically and led her community with a magnetic poise. Jeanette, born in Missouri and shortly after adopted by John and Edna Barkley of Burnside, Iowa, spent her youth with eyes on the horizon aiming for a big, adventurous life.
In her early 20s, she manifested ‘wings’ and relocated to Wisconsin, taking her three young children, Maria, Michelle and Mark to Madison, where she courageously set out to build them a full and joyous life. Jeanette went on to work for various organizations but completed her professional career at the UW Hospital in pediatrics administration. Jeanette was a leader in her community helping to start and grow the youth softball program in the Middleton area. She was instrumental in inspiring many young girls and women around the area to seek out their dreams of playing higher level softball. In doing this, Jeanette built a community of friends that she kept throughout her life. She also played a key role as a leader in the Badger State Games and later in life was named one of Madison’s Women of Distinction for her multitude of accolades and volunteer experiences.
Beyond her widespread community impact, Jeanette was a remarkable grandma to her grandchildren and a strong mother to her children. She made sure that each of them knew that she loved them every day and taught them to love wholeheartedly and unconditionally. Jeanette was also a devoted friend to many, but especially to her dearest friend and “Thelma and Louise” adventure buddy, "Joycen."
Her vivacious spirit, made evident by her unruly collection of funky accessories, her always painted red toenails, and her sweet vanilla scent, will live on in those who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, Jeanette would appreciate donations to be made to DAIS in her memory. (abuseintervention.org/donate).
A celebration of Jeanette’s life (open house) will take place at MADISON TENNEY PARK (JWF shelter) on Lake Mendota, 402 N. Thornton Ave., Madison, Wis., from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. with a short memorial program beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2025. Please direct any further questions to her daughter, Michelle.
