John C. Hefte

MCFARLAND - John Hefte completed his journey to be with the Lord on May 6, 2025, surrounded by love. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, John lived his life with the mission of leaving the world better than he found it-and by every measure, he succeeded.

Born on March 10, 1943, in Caledonia, Minn., to Inoh and Marie Hefte, John grew up with strong values and a passion for service. He graduated from Luther College in 1965, where he was a four-year letter winner in basketball and built lifelong friendships. On December 26, 1965, he married his high school sweetheart, Sandra, beginning a 59-year journey of love and partnership.

John began his career in education at Madison East High School, teaching and coaching football, basketball, and track. His passion for mentoring young people touched thousands of students and athletes over the years, fulfilling his life’s purpose. In 1970, John and Sandra embraced the adventure of a lifetime, teaching for two years in Tripoli, Libya. His time overseas left a lasting impression-not only on him but on his children, who would go on to dedicate their own careers to international education.

After 34 years of teaching and coaching, John retired in 1999. He remained deeply involved in education by supervising student teachers from UW-Madison and Luther College. He was an avid sports fan and loyal supporter of all Wisconsin teams, especially the Badgers. He took great pride in traveling to cheer on his daughter as she played for the UW Women’s Basketball team. His greatest recreational passion was golf-so much so that he once proudly claimed to have played 19 consecutive months in Madison.

In retirement, John found joy in traveling, particularly to visit his children during their teaching assignments in Malaysia and China. Whether at home or abroad, his love for family was constant and unwavering.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Sandra; his children, Mark (Ann) Hefte and Leah (Matt) Kuykendall; and his cherished grandchildren, Hayden and Emerson (children of Mark), and Talia and Kieran (children of Leah). He is also survived by his brother, Art (Bev); and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Richard; half-brother, Bob; and half-sisters, Ione, Ruth and Audrey.

Those who knew John will remember him for the three guiding principles of his life: faith, family and friends. His kindness, strength and unwavering commitment to others will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of life will be held at MCDANIEL PARK in McFarland (located on Lake Waubesa), from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
