Welch Carlos Everman
November 17, 1987 - April 13, 2025
Obituary
MADISON - Welch C. “Carlos” Everman, age 37, of Monona, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at UW Hospital after enduring many hardships - in the presence of his mother, brother and longtime girlfriend. He was born on November 17, 1987, in the mountains surrounding Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He was adopted by his loving parents, Welch D. Everman and Elizabeth A. Bard, and brought home to Orono, Maine in the fall of 1988. They adopted his brother, John L. Everman, four years later.
Carlos spent his early childhood learning a new language and adapting to a new home - a process which was not without setbacks. But with a quiet determination that he maintained for the rest of his life, he overcame those obstacles with love and laughter and became a model for surmounting difficulties to everyone lucky enough to have known him.
Spending countless hours as a child on the couch with his idol - his father he called “Pop” - Carlos inherited a lifelong passion and love for movies and television such as Godzilla and his favorite show Smallville, as well as a fandom for superheroes and comic books following the adventures of Superman, Batman and Spider-Man among many others.
An avid lover of video games and proud big brother, Carlos began playing the Nintendo early on with his little brother, John, and sustained this interest for the rest of his life, always excited to purchase and play newly released games of all types.
He always enjoyed food and learned to cook at a young age, proud to show off his stir fry dishes and culinary acumen which he found in a household of many home cooked meals made with love by his mother, Liz.
Carlos listened to music of all genres and was known to dance carefreely down Main Street with his headphones on in the warm summer air or brisk fall breeze. Growing up in New England, Carlos also developed a major interest in following Boston sports and was lucky enough to have celebrated seeing many championships over his lifetime.
After his father’s passing, Carlos moved with his family to Wisconsin in 2005 where he attended Monona Grove High School, graduating in 2007. He attended Madison College afterwards and would work various jobs, none of which he enjoyed more than his position assisting travelers with luggage and wheelchair transport at the Dane County Regional Airport.
Carlos began dating the love of his life, Denise Marking, in 2010 and they remained devoted to each other for 15 years until his death - forging countless cherished experiences and memories together while helping each other grow as people and broaden their horizons in unexpected ways. He will be forever loved and missed by Denise and her family.
Carlos was a beacon of light in a dark, cruel world. Known for his childlike, infectious smile and laugh, he was quick to brighten any space he occupied with a positivity uncommon for those who experience the trials and tribulations he faced. A victim of chronic health problems, he never saw himself as victimized and continued having a zest for life. A victim of bullying - thought less of by lesser people - he never lost his love for humanity, able to befriend anyone, young or old. Carlos admired and idolized superheroes and, in many ways, reached those lofty levels himself as an eternal inspiration and representation of goodness and of resilience.
“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” - Christopher Reeve
Carlos is survived by his mother, Liz Bard; younger brother, John Everman; his beloved family cat, Zoe; girlfriend, Denise Marking; aunt and uncle, Kate Bard and Pat Laritson; and his cousins, Hank and Matt Laritson. He was preceded in death by his father, Welch D. Everman; his grandparents, John and Betty Bard, Welch C. and Ruth Everman; uncle, Jack Bard; aunt, Nicole Bianco-Spadoni; and many beloved family pets.
The Everman-Bard family would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the Trauma and Life Support Center at UW-Hospital for their kindness and care while treating Carlos. We would also like to greatly thank the Speech Therapy Department at the University of Maine and the friends and parishioners at St. Anne’s in the Penobscot community for their care and support of Carlos during his childhood.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Carlos to the Dane County Humane Society, Fox Valley Humane Association in Appleton, or any of your local animal rescue groups.
A visitation will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 11 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., with a Mass to follow. After Mass, a gathering and lunch will take place at the school in the same location.
