Gregory Spencer Percy

February 06, 1960 - April 20, 2025

Obituary

The encores are over, time to take a bow. It was a great show and we are so glad to have been a part of it with you. Gregory Spencer Percy passed away on April 20, 2025, with loved ones by his side.

Greg was born in Trenton, N.J. on February 6, 1960. He grew up in Madison, graduated from Madison Memorial High School and UW-Madison with a degree in Art Education. Greg taught art in several school districts, but his longest tenure was within the Madison District, specifically at Schenk Elementary, Whitehorse Middle, and East High School. He retired in 2017 after 34 years of teaching.

He met his wife, Chris, at UW-Madison and had many fun times with their growing group of lifelong friends, often entertaining them at Headliners while playing in his college band Spanky or DJing for them at the Church Key.

He was the proud dad to their three sons and enjoyed cheering for them in all of their sports and activities. His passion for teaching extended outside of the classroom as he was always excited to coach his sons’ teams as they grew up.

When he wasn’t sitting on a sideline or in the bleachers, he could be found prepping the backyard pool for another pool party or playing bass guitar in one of his bands. He loved being in front of people and was always comfortable with an instrument or microphone in hand. His kids and their friends often came to his shows and had fun dancing to the music from their dad’s era.

Besides his family, he was proud of his five art-based albums titled “Songs in the Key of Art.” Comprised of songs with topics ranging from famous artists to art theory, these albums further extended his reach in educating and exciting students about art. He performed his songs in the Key of Art songs for children in schools and communities all over the country.

Greg was an avid skier and skied many mountains out west and in the Midwest. He was also a big soccer fan and played intramural and men’s leagues for many years. A trip to the 2006 World Cup in Germany with his family was fun and memorable.

Greg loved to fish wherever he could - Hawaii, Mexico, Florida, Lake Powell, Grand Tetons, Trout Lake, Lake Redstone, and Lake Tahoe along with all the lakes at the camping spots the family visited. Other hobbies included golf and biking.

He had many fond memories of attending many Packers games and Badgers games, including two Rose Bowls, with dear friends and family over the years.

He will be remembered for his quick wit and humor, his easy-going personality, his patience, his ability to fix almost anything, and his vast knowledge of obscure trivia. But mostly he will be remembered for being a great dad, grandpa and husband.

Greg is survived by his wife, Chris; sons, Tyler (Lindsey), Michael (Jen), and Brett (Bailey); grandchildren, Maya, Brooks, and Ella; mother, Margaret; brothers, Christopher and Kevin (Diane); brothers-in-law, Curt Neuhauser (Sue) and Eric Neuhauser (Kim); sister-in-law, Carol Boschert; and many dear nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Percy.

Special thanks to the Agrace Hospice staff, the caregivers from Senior Helpers, the caregivers at Oak Park Place, and Drs. Mangin and Porter.

In lieu of flowers, may we suggest a donation in Greg’s memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, the Wisconsin chapter of the American Parkinson's Disease Association or Agrace Hospice.

Please join us to share memories and celebrate Greg at THE EAST SIDE CLUB, 3735 Monona Drive, Madison, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2025. Since Greg's idea of dressing up was a clean, unwrinkled jersey, not a collared shirt, we encourage everyone to sport your favorite Packers, Badgers, or Monona Grove gear-Greg wouldn’t have had it any other way!

I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Percy's passing. He was my art teacher for many years starting at Schenk and we were in touch beyond that time. He had a big impact on me and my following art beyond that time in his classes Schenk. Wow, what a huge loss!

Heartbroken over the loss of Greg. Much love to Chris, Migs and the family. So many good memories of playing music around southern WI with him and the guys in Spanky, and our several reunions over the years. He was always a joy to be around - humorous, quick witted, excellent comedic timing. If you haven’t seen it first hand, here he is playing a song he wrote in the early 80’s: https://youtu.be/zBUvheRqWo0?si=hWs8iSGmgdnDSl2Q Godspeed my brother. Bean

Greg will live on through his wonderful family and many friends. He will also be remembered for his artistic legacy through his music and art contributions. My Winnequah School students were very lucky to have performed a concert with him that featured his songs. I am also remembering a conversation with a friend who taught art in Pennsylvania who used his Songs in the Key of Art in her classroom to teach her kids about artists and their lives. She was a big fan! I have no doubt there are art teachers all over the country that have appreciated his contributions to art education. He was a rock star, and I was lucky to know him!

In elementary school at Schenk Mr. Percy once loaned me the four VHS set of "How to Draw Cartoon Animals By Bruce Blitz" because I was always drawing goofy characters of my own instead of doing the assignments that he set for us each week. I don't focus on pencil art much anymore but I and many others that were in his class through those years are still doing art today and we owe that in part to Mr. Percy making his art lessons fun and interesting. His songs where always fun even though the only one I can remember is "The Primary Colors". And you can't forget jamming out to Cotton Eyed Joe at points parties at the end of the school year when he would DJ.
