Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Herbert Jabs passed away on January 27, 2025, at the age of 63. The first-born son of Erwin and Käthe Jabs, Herb and his brother, Wally, and sister, Erika, were born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin. After attending Madison East High School, Herb graduated from Madison Area Technical College with an associate’s degree in Electronics. He had been a resident of Mount Horeb, Wisconsin for 25 years.

Herb is leaving behind a legacy of quiet strength and a genuine appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. A lifelong fishing enthusiast, Herb found peace and renewal on calm waters at daybreak, embracing the serene rhythm of nature as a source of comfort and inspiration.

Viewed by some as a gentle giant, Herb’s presence was matched only by his kind heart and soulful nature. His warm smile, thoughtful nature, and meticulous attention to detail made him a beloved figure to those around him. A deeply spiritual man, he found meaning in the world around him, cherishing the profound connections between nature and the human spirit.

Herb always wanted the best for everyone, offering kindness, wisdom, and encouragement to all. He was known for his generosity and always offered a willing hand to those in need, ready to lend support without hesitation. His ability to notice the little things in life, combined with his reflective and down-to-earth character, allowed him to live each day with quiet passion. In addition to his love for fishing, he held a deep fondness for blues music - a taste that added even more depth to his soulful nature.

In his life, Herb was blessed to find his soulmate, Nancy, who completed him in every way. Together, they shared a deep and enduring love, finding joy and peace in each other’s presence. Her loss to cancer was devastating and left a void in his heart that could never be filled. Yet, Herb carried her memory with him always, and her spirit continued to inspire him as he moved forward, cherishing the time they shared.

Herb is survived by his life partner, Patricia Schmidt; father, Erwin Jabs; brother, Wally (Michele) Jabs along with their children, Cece Jabs and Keeley Jabs; sister, Erika (Keith) Esser; beloved Aunt Hilda Jeschke; niece, Emilie Glotfelty; and nephews, Jeff Gilreath and Davy Gilreath. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Braun; mother, Käthe Jabs; and grandparents, Adolf and Emilie Jabs and Herman and Inge Carstensen.

Herb’s family was always central to his heart, and the bonds he shared with them brought him great joy and a deep sense of fulfillment.

A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON CAMACHO MOUNT HOREB FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 500 N. Eighth St., Mount Horeb, on Saturday, March 15, 2025. I planted a tree for Nancy when you lost her and you were so moved by it, I’m planting one for you in the same area of the woods. I know you went and visited that place on more than one occasion. Now you can be at peace there as well. Rest in Peace, my friend. It was an honor to know you and a bigger honor to be able to carry those memories. Rick

I knew Herb since 1990 opening the first Best Buy in Madison. A gentle giant who towered over me but had much to give. Many memories and he passed a lot of knowledge to me and co-workers. Godspeed Herb.

I am so very sorry to read of Herb's passing. I was a long time neighbor across the street on Walton Pl and enjoyed watching all of the children grow up. May your memories of Herb help with the sorrow you feel. Hold them close to your heart and share them with each other. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Jean Schultz Walker

I am a neighbor of Herb's parents and met him when his mother passed. I did not ever actually meet him in person. He called me to tell me about his Mom, and though we had never met before, we talked for about an hour. He was a very kind, thoughtful, and respectful man. I did chat with him after that occasionally regarding his father, and always found him to be a very caring soul. I am so sorry for you loss. ~Sarah West Whitcomb and Family

My condolences to Herb's family. I had the good fortune to work next to Herb over the last 10 years. We both loved to take long road trips and would share pictures through our vehicle dashboards as we were driving through some far away place. One thing Herb said to me is that you always have to make a stop for ice cream when traveling with your family so I would send pictures of my family getting ice cream at road side stops in out trips, too. And from now on, I'll always be thinking of Herb anytime we get ice cream on our vacations.
