I found Joan’s picture in the Madison Sunday paper and recognized her name right away. Joan was my part time 6th grade teacher at Westside school in Niles in 1959-60 along with Hester Scott who was the part time principal. I had just moved to Niles that year. We all liked Mrs. Skyles. Her husband was the junior high principal in Niles for my time there. I remember going to meet with him along with a friend. We made a request to be able to wear culottes to school, (and I’d had just sewn a pair) arguing that culottes were more modest. He turned us down. Girls had to wear skirts back then; no exceptions. How dress codes have changed! I moved to Wisconsin in 1970 and live in Middleton. Small world! Sally Robinson Lister
