Jack Lee Melby

April 03, 1949 - November 16, 2024

Obituary

Jack Melby, age 75, of Madison, passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital. He was born on April 3, 1949, in La Crosse, the son of Orville and Lucille (Stedman) Melby.

Jack, a spirited soul whose zest for life was matched only by his love for family and sports, passed away surrounded by his loved ones. A proud graduate of Brookwood High School in 1967, Jack's athleticism was apparent early on as he excelled in basketball, football, and baseball. His talents and hard work ethic were honed on the Melby family farm in Ontario, which provided a strong foundation for his subsequent achievements.

A true patriot, Jack served his country valiantly in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His bravery and dedication were recognized with a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After his military service, he furthered his education at UW - La Crosse, earning a bachelor’s degree, and opening his business, Jack Melby Construction and Realty. In later years, Jack found joy in driving for local dealerships, a role that allowed him to forge great friendships.

Jack was an avid Badgers fan. His generosity knew no bounds, especially when it came to his children and grandchildren, whom he took to many games, outfitting them in Badgers gear to help support the team. Jack loved spending time with his beloved family, cherishing every moment with his children, grandchildren, and extended family. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, Badger pride, and unwavering spirit.

Jack is survived by his children, Jessica (Adam) Basala, Amanda Heuer (Alex), and John (Marisa) Melby; grandchildren, Evelyn, Luella, Nora and Wesley Basala, Oliver and Vivienne Heuer, and Sienna, Declan and Landon Melby; twin sister, Jill (Al) Graewin; brother, Brian (Linda Gunther) Melby; former wife, Pamela; nieces and nephews, Shad (Nina), Kelly, Renee (Scott), April (Chris), Alex, Megan (Kevin); and great-nieces and nephews, Cam, Oscar, Carter, Mason, Bailey, Jake, Cooper, Isaiah (Michallie), Eli, Cate and Avery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Lucille; and sister, Anita (Donnie) Fanta.

Our families did a lot together before and after having kids. Mom took us to Alaska, Hawaii, and Hong Kong. I remember the guys having suits made in Hong Kong, (White!) and Jack getting over 20 ties for a dollar apiece. During summers, we got the cousins together at Balsam Lake, then Door County and finally Lake Geneva. But vivid in all our of minds were our Christmas’s together in Mom and Dad’s Norwalk living room and the wonderland of presents. Jack got a new sport coat for many years that was wrapped and hanging in the closet. We thought a lot of Jack, even naming our second son, Alexander Jack after him. He often showed his kindness and caring to each member of our family. I’m glad he was in our lives.
