Obituary
MOUNT HOREB- Bernadette M. Edseth, a dynamic soul known for her dry sarcasm, love of fast cars and wonderfully outlandish fashion, and spirited heart, passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness at the UW Hospital, on September 27, 2024. Born on September 19, 1971, in Madison, Wisconsin, Bernadette's life was a testament to her continuous efforts to make things better for her family, those by blood and by choice.
Bernadette attended Mount Horeb High School, where she laid the foundation for her future endeavors. After graduation, she embarked on a career that would see her become an influential member of her hometown community. Bernadette was the proud owner and operator of BME Rentals LLC, and MBE Rentals LLC where she was not just a landlord but a friend to her tenants. She took great pride in providing affordable housing opportunities for people to live in this community who may otherwise have been forced to the fringes. She was also dedicated to her work in the pharmaceutical industry, where she was respected for her work ethic, in-depth knowledge of the industry, and honest assessment of any issue.
Family was the cornerstone of Bernadette's life. She is survived by her loving daughter, Abygael Edseth; her wonderful son, Jacob Jarmel; her friend and co-parenting partner, Michael Birkeland, and his daughters, Gretta and Harper Birkeland; her brothers, Chris (Shelly) Edseth Sr. and Terry (Corky) Edseth; and her sister, Dawnne Edseth. Additionally, Bernadette's vibrant personality and attitude will live on through her many cousins, nieces, and nephews who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Verlyn, who gave her the joy of kick-ass vehicles, and June, who instilled in her the values of kindness and generosity that she carried throughout her life.
Bernadette's determination in life was evident in everything she did. She was fierce, in business, fashion, and mothering, a sassy and confident woman, and a force multiplier in the world. Bernadette helped many with her honest and insightful advice and unwavering support for a friend in need. She always had a helping hand for those who wanted to help themselves. Her role as a mother was her greatest joy, and she gave all of herself to the care of her children. Bernadette's love extended to her feline companions. Preceded in death: Harvard, Fifi (Fiona), Tunes (Petunia), Tooster (Chewy). Still being cats: Edward (The Big Guy) and Debra (Stanks!). They were a source of great comfort and companionship for Bernadette.
An amazing cook, Bernadette delighted in preparing meals that brought people together. For many years, she hosted holiday dinners and did them lovingly. Her hobbies included crafting, sewing, and assembling puzzles, each reflecting her meticulous and creative spirit. She found peace in the great outdoors, whether it was camping with Mike and the kids or taking “Back Roads, Music Blasting” Sunday drives in her bright orange Dodge Challenger SRT8, manual 6-speed with 425 horses under the hood (aka, the Sunday Car). Retail therapy was another of Bernadette's favorite pastimes, a time for her to unwind and indulge in the lighter side of life. She could always find the best deal on the most amazing outfit for herself and others, and then she’d get another 10% off.
Bernadette's quick jokes and witty humor were one of her best attributes. She had the unique ability to find humor in the mundane and she certainly made people laugh at just the right time. Her presence was a gift to all who knew her, and her absence will be felt deeply.
A celebration of life for Bernadette as well as her parents, Verlyn and June, will be held at Gunderson Camacho Mount Horeb Funeral and Cremation Care, 500 N. Eighth Street, Mount Horeb at a date in the near future. Details will be shared when finalized.
Please think of an outfit for that day that Bernadette would be proud of… The brighter and wilder the pattern, the better.
