Obituary

DEFOREST - Gale A. Holloway was born to Bernard and Sylvia Holloway in Baraboo, Wis., on Sept. 22, 1946, and was born to Eternal Life on April 2, 2024. He spent his last days surrounded by his loving wife, Cheryl, their daughters and close friends.

Gale graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in civil engineering in 1970. He served in the U.S. Army for a brief time and then worked for the DNR until his retirement. He then co-founded Alieus Engineering, LLC so he could continue to provide support to those involved with the fish ladders and barriers.

Gale loved the outdoors. Fishing, camping, hunting, beekeeping, birdwatching, model airplane piloting, motorcycle rides, photography and gardening were some of his favorite hobbies. His gardens at his home in DeForest were a great source of pride. He loved his time spent with family at “The Hill.”

Gale was a man of many indoor interests as well. He was always learning and tinkering with new ideas. His garage and basement gave him space to fix cars and boats, repair model airplanes, make wine, work with wood, and create the biodiesel which powered his beloved Volkswagens. He will be remembered as the guy who could fix anything from toasters to tractors and provided sound advice on any subject until his very last days with us.

Gale shared his time and talents with his children and others through 4-H leadership for over 25 years. He built the potato stand used at the Dane County Fair to raise funds for the program. Gale also poured his heart and soul into creating thousands of craft projects for the Sunday School program at church. If Cheryl needed 200 wooden crosses hand-cut, then he hand-cut 200 wooden crosses. He loved teaching Sunday School. Gale also shared his deep love of music and guitar playing with them. His joy of music inspired him to start the Alieus church band and spent endless hours rehearsing for performances. Gale and Cheryl were active members of Living Water Church.  He was also a member of the Gideons for several years and also served on the Board for the Norway Grove Cemetery.

He found a love for cooking and baking. Gale was soon making cheesecakes for every gathering he attended. He also lovingly created wedding cakes for his three daughters, a feat of engineering and creativity. Grandpa Gale’s grandchildren will forever cherish memories created while riding roller coasters, making breakfast after a sleepover, Easter egg hunts, Christmas get togethers and when he came to school and sporting events. Gale's love for music was only surpassed by the pride he took in his grandchildren's musical talents.

Gale is survived by his wife, Cheryl. He also leaves behind three daughters, Lori (Geoff) Brown, Kari (Mark) Grossklaus and Wendi (Gabe Bauer) Holloway; and his grandchildren, Nathan, Ashley and Riley Grossklaus, Ellie, Arik, Andrew and Sam Bauer, and Bowen and Garett Brown. He is further survived by his sisters, Nancy Jaeger, Loni (Tim) Brzezinski, and Kathi (Bill) Wiedenhoeft; brother, Dan (Patricia Baker) Holloway; and brother-in-law, David Medick.  He was preceded in death by his son, Todd Holloway; his parents, Bernard and Sylvia Holloway; sister, Anita (Dave) Heiser; and nephew, Jeremy Heiser; brother-in-law, Dr. Robert Jaeger; and sister-in-law, Luann Medick.

A memorial service will be held at LIVING WATER CHURCH, 3075 Prospect Drive, Sun Prairie, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2024, with Pastor Sean Steinke presiding.  Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Burial will take place at Norway Grove Cemetery, DeForest, Wis. at a later date.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at UW-Madison who cared for him in his last days.

Gale was an awesome cousin and friend. I always enjoyed our gatherings around lakes, parks, and exploring many city adventures around Wisconsin! RIP Gale

Gale was a more subtle and steady version of his name. If the first quality of love is 'Love is patient" then Gale reminded us of the starting place of love - and the starting point of faith, which is hope. He lived in hope.

Gale had a positive and constant impact on so many lives, young and old. He was a truely amazing person. In our family, he left a legacy of countless woodworking and craft projects that he gifted us at Christmas. Most are still in use or displayed to this day. As a young boy, I remember looking up to Gale as a big brother (15 years older) that I respected and wanted to emulate. Being so much older than me he was like a Dad to me..... but a really fun one. I have memories of sitting on the front of his Harley seat as he took me for a ride (no helmets).... one hand on each gas tank cap, and feet on the role bar. I remember one time we stopped at a stop sign and I noticed that my feet had slipped off the role bar and onto the engine. The sole of my brand new tennis shoes had melted. A sad and tramatic moment for a young boy, but Gale assured me it would be alright, and Mom would buy me new ones. I recall so many fun times with my BIG brother. Dan Holloway
