MADISON- Stephen D. Thompson, known affectionately to friends and family as Steve, passed away in Milwaukee, Wis., on March 8, 2024, at the age of 55. Born on Sept. 18, 1968, in Rockford, Ill., Steve was a warm, kind, generous, loving, and caring soul who brought happiness to all who knew him.
After working at Morgan Stanley, Steve pursued his entrepreneurial spirit and owned successful businesses, providing jobs for many people, where his passion brought smiles and festivity to the customers and communities in which he worked. His work resonated with his friendly nature, as he enjoyed spending quality time with his friends and family.
Steve leaves behind a loving legacy, survived by his daughter, Veronnica (Tyler Lynch) Thompson; grandson, Atticus; his parents, Gerald and Mary Thompson; two sisters, Diana Singletary and Kelly (Mark) Johnson; his brother, Scott Thompson; and six nieces and nephews. The memory of his son, Tyler Thompson, who preceded Steve in death, is cherished in the hearts of the family.
Steve's memory will be treasured for his gregarious personality and compassionate heart. Known for his quick-wit and humor, he brought cheer to all those around him, with a gift for empathic understanding. He is fondly recalled as a fun-loving uncle for his story-telling, treat-giving, and humorous asides he made that helped to buoy family and friends. With a twinkle in his eye, he had a gift for laughing at himself and encouraging others to take themselves less seriously.
A generous host and capable grill-master, Steve spent time with those he loved, flipping sirloins while sharing his many facts and stories about history. With a curiosity for learning and much hands-on life experience, he was always ready to lend a hand whether it was offering sage advice or in picking-up a shovel. Nieces and nephews still share stories from their infamous Dune’s camping trip in which he stared-down an intruding raccoon. Devoted to his two children, he was a proud father and grandfather, devoted son, caring brother, and fun-loving uncle. Steve was many things to many people, but mostly he made everyone feel special and loved. Steve will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
