Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Margene Arlene Walstad, age 88, of Mount Horeb, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023, at Agrace HospiceCare, Fitchburg, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on July 12, 1934, in Boscobel, Wis., the daughter of Raymond and Opal Miller (Kielly). She had one younger brother, John.

Margene graduated from Boscobel High School in 1952. She married Kenneth George Walstad, the love of her life, on Feb. 11, 1956, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Mount Horeb, Wis. Together they raised three children whom she was very proud of. When she graduated from high school, she was a telephone operator in Sauk Prairie, Wis., and later did many things, was a daycare provider out of her home for many years until she retired and enjoyed the kids doing projects and crafts. She enjoyed researching and going on trips to gather genealogy for both sides of the Walstad-Miller families and put many family books together. Her passion was making things, from crocheting, scrubbies, dish mitts, afghans, hats, cross-stich, needlepoint, ceramics, sewing barbie clothes, and making my sister and I clothes in our early years in school and gifting to her family her homemade items. She enjoyed tending to her flowers, planting perennials, and black cap picking on the farm. They enjoyed traveling and taking summer vacations, especially to Switzerland, Norway, Alaska plus many more.

Margene is survived by her daughter, Judith (Steven) Hefty of Mount Horeb; son, David Walstad of Panama City Beach, Fla. (Jenny Suong Vo of Saigon, Viet Nam); six grandchildren, Amy Czyzewski (Ryan), Chad Hefty (Janelle) of Mount Horeb, Kayla Hefty of Belleville, Lance Hefty of Greenfield, Ryan Walstad (Jessica) of Highland, Md., and Chelsea Walstad of Perry Hall, Md.; and four great-grandchildren, Jaina and Marissa Czyzewski and Olivia and Mila Hefty. She will soon be great-grandmother to twin boys coming in April with Ryan (Jessica).

She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Janice Miller of Boscobel, Florence Lenaway of Tuczon, Ariz., and Marge Walstad of Lodi; brother-in-law, Thomas (Elaine) Walstad of Cross Plains; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Walstad; brother, John Miller; great-granddaughter, Ava Leia Czyzewski; daughter, Kathleen Walstad; parents, Raymond and Opal Miller; sisters-in-law, Donna Schultz (Alard), Dorothy O’Connell (Larry) and Doris Walstad; brothers-in-law, Charles (Ramona) Walstad, Burdette Walstad, Roger Walstad, Curtis Walstad and Bill Lenaway; and nephews, Jeffrey Schultz, Timothy Walstad and Ross Walstad.
