Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Stephen Gerard Fleck, 66, announce his passing. Steve, along with his beloved dog, Gille Dubh, was killed by a hit-and-run driver, on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023.


Steve was preceded in death by his son, Gerrit; wife, Tamae; mother, Rosemarie; and brothers, William and John. Steve will forever be remembered by his children, Kailen, Jaiman, Giorgi, Petya and Talya; father, William; siblings and their spouses, Michael Fleck, Christine (Dexter) Mueller, Theresa Fleck, Andrew (Nancy) Fleck and Katherine (Richard) Festge; siblings-in-law, Mary Kate Fitzgerald-Fleck, Pam Fleck and Daniel and Maxine DeYoung; numerous nieces, nephews, and their spouses; great-nieces and nephews; aunts, uncle, cousins and their families; and his many friends.


Steve graduated from Madison Queen of Apostles High School, Edgewood College, and Wayne State University. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Steve was known for his towering height, quick wit, intelligent dialogue, lyrical writing, intricate art, philosopher's mind, and compassionate counselor heart. Godspeed Steve, and peace be with you. Until we meet again.


A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 12 noon on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, and from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.

Steve and Gille Dubh were both my best friends at the complex where we lived. The bonding that he and his dog shared was not something I have rarely seen before - it was really something to see. Steve was one of the best and kindest men I have ever known and he will be missed for a very long time. My sincere condolences to his family and other friends.

The highlight of my early childhood was the time I spent playing my cousin Steve at our grandparents or around the railroad tracks behind Steve’s house. We moved away after my 4th grade year and I eventually lost the connection. I still vividly recall his mischievous laugh and see an echo of it in my own son that will now be a reminder of his life cut short and the lost chance for reconnecting while I still could have.

My condolences to the Fleck family. I had the good fortune of attending high school with Steve and being part of the class of 74. Steve was a good, honest and sincere friend. My everlasting memory of Steve and his quick wit and dry humor was in our junior year. Fellow classmate Jerry Tiedt and I were on the track team with Steve. We had finished our workouts and Steve was still working on his shot put throws.The shot put is a 12 pound meter ball.Jerry and I went out into the field to return the shots back to Steve. Soon Jerry and I became distracted with this task. Steve noticed this and waited for us to turn our backs to him. Steve gave his normal scream as he would do when throwing the shot. Well Jerry and I heard the sound, thinking that one of us was about to get hit in the head with this 12 pound ball. We were frozen in fear and stared at each other in what seemed hours. Then we heard Steve laughing and turned around to see Steve rolling on the ground laughing. He sure got us with something we still talk about. Steve you were a great friend. Together we went to the Santana and many other concerts. You worked me hard to join the marines with you. It is an honor to have been your friend. high school and the world was better because of you.
