Obituary

MADISON - Carol Jean Hoyer, age 74, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023, of lung cancer, at her home in Madison, Wis. She was born in Greendale, Wis., the daughter of Irene H. Hoyer and Leo H. Hoyer. She is survived by her husband and soulmate of 49 years, Bill Winfield; her five children, Juniper Francalanza, Samara Chism-Winfield, Lily Hoyer-Winfield,  Kryn Sausedo and Cole Hoyer-Winfield; 13 grandchildren; her sister, Barbara Trost; and cousin, Patricia Carny.

Carol was a proud child of the FDR’s new deal.  She grew up in historic Greendale, Wis., one of three “garden cities” built for city workers. She enjoyed riding to school through greenspace parks between affordable houses, cooperative stores, gardens and schools. These community values shaped her lifelong belief in fair play and progressive Democratic ideals.

After attending UW Madison, she worked as a medical researcher in ophthalmology as part of the Beaver Dam Eye Study investigating visual loss caused by age-related macular degeneration.

In the mid 1970’s she started a family with her husband, Bill Winfield.  They were part of vibrant community restoring homes in Madison’s near east side Marquette neighborhood.  Even while caring for her young children, she actively participated in school and community events and celebrations. She was an avid knitter and knitting designer. After retiring, she developed her jewelry making skills, tutored children at Mendota school and expanded her beautiful flower garden.

The family will be holding a Celebration of Life gathering in Carol’s honor at the GOODMAN COMMUNITY CENTER, Lau Christensen Room, 214 Waubesa St., Madison, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that people make donations to causes that were near and dear to Carol’s heart - https://gofund.me/81c15efb.

Her family wishes to thank her many loving friends for their meals and support during the past two years of her illness. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Carol and I could share memories of growing up in one of Eleanor Roosevelt’s green belt communities. Carol from Greendale in Wisconsin and myself from Greenhill’s in Ohio by Cincinnati. We shared many happy times together with our children!

My sincere condolences to family and friends of Carol. I share the high school experience with Carol at Greendale High School. I remember her as always having a smile on her face and a joyous, positive attitude. I moved away shortly after school but recently connected with classmates and learned of her illness. I know she will be missed. May she Rest In Peace. Gay (Yager) Magistro

I am so sad to learn of Carol's death .... she and Bill and family were central to my time as a staff person at Marquette Elementary. Carol was a dedicated member of this community -- and we are all better for her work, love, and commitment to making the world a better, more just place.

I, Hediye Miras, was a Foreign Exchange AFS Student at Greendale High School 1966. I have beautiful memories in that one year in Greendale with her. I was so sad when I heard she is no longer with us. May she rest in peace. Love you Carol❤️🙏

Dear Carol’s family, I am very saddened to read of Carol’s passing. I am giving you a quote by Khalil Gibran that has always given me comfort. I hope it shall do the same for you, “When you are sorrowful, look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.” In peace, Pat Champion
