Obituary
FITCHBURG - Goldie went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023. She passed away peacefully at home in her sleep.
Goldie battled Parkinson’s for 18 years. It took away her ability to ski and do many other things. But it never took away her love for her family and for the Lord. She always had a positive attitude, you never heard her complain about it. Goldie was strong, forgiving, patient, loving, selfless, dependable, and sweet. Many commented about her nice smile. “Mother” means selfless devotion, limitless sacrifices, and love that passes understanding (unknown author). That describes our mother. Christmas was Goldie’s favorite holiday.
Goldie was born in Sauk County, Wis., to Robert and Esther DeBeir. She was the second of their four children. She graduated from Reedsburg High School where she was a cheerleader for football and basketball. She attended the UW-Madison for one year.
In 1960, Goldie married Larry Hurley of Reedsburg. They lived in Madison until the time of her passing. Goldie and Larry have two children, Kim and Greg (Kirsten); and two grandchildren, Camille and Garrett Hurley.
Over the years Goldie worked for several different companies: Pharmacy Association, Red Dot Potato Chips, Madison Travel, Phillips Distributing, U.S. Census Bureau, and Woods Hollow Daycare. She did take time off to raise her children and foster children. She also ran a daycare in her home.
Goldie loved to spend time up at the cabin on Lake Redstone and she loved to travel. She went to many different states and countries to ski, ride the trains, go on cruises, and attend Badgers games. She traveled to 39 different countries and skied at 150 different ski resorts.
Goldie was an avid sports fan. You name the sport, and she probably had it on the TV. For over 40 years she attended hundreds of Badgers football, hockey, volleyball, softball and women’s basketball games.
She was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church since 1961. At the church she was involved with the book club, the quilt club, and the altar guild. She was in the Orchard Ridge bowling league in the 1960s and 1970s. Goldie and her family were members at Ridgewood pool where Goldie swam many a lap.
Goldie started the Madison Convertible Club in 1989, where they took bi-monthly rides and had dinner afterwards. Goldie and Larry were members of the Convertible Club for close to 25 years. Goldie and Larry were members of the National Metropolitan car club for 30 years. Larry Goldie were both treasurers and membership chairpersons for Metropolitan Owners’ Club of North America (MOCNA).
Goldie and her family were members of the Madison Ski Club since the 1970s. They took many trips with the ski club around the U.S., Canada, Europe and New Zealand. Some were even by train. Goldie was a graceful and beautiful skier. Goldie and Larry handled the travel arrangements for the Madison Ski Club for close to 40 years. Goldie was also a member of the Madison Jaycettes for 10 years.
Goldie was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Esther; her siblings, Gloria Giese, Roberta Mayer and Arlan DeBeir; and her nephews, Mark Giese and Jason Mayer. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Larry; her children, Kim and Greg (Kirsten); her grandchildren, Camille and Garrett; and many extended family members.
A memorial service will be held at MOUNT OLIVE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 110 N. Whitney Way, Madison, at 12 noon on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023. A visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.
