Obituary

OREGON - Gerald Platt, age 84, passed away peacefully in his home in Oregon, Wis., on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022.  


Gerald, known by loved ones as Jerry, was born in Lancaster, Wis., on April 23, 1938, to Graydon and Jeanette Platt. He met the love of his life, Marlene Kamps, in Belmont and they were married in 1957.


Jerry went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1961, while growing a family of four children. He started his career as a Civil Engineer with Arnold and O’Sheridan in Madison, Wis. Jerry later became a full-time vegetable farmer, vending at the Dane County Farmer’s Market for over 40 years, a tradition carried on by both his daughters and grandson.


He was a man of substance and kindness who worked hard and valued his family and friends. He loved to fish and hunt and spent many winters casting a line from his fishing boat the "Ann Marie" in Cozumel, Mexico, and had many more fishing adventures with his great friend, Blackie, off Sanibel’s coastline. Though he never caught many fish in Hawaii he was able to spend quality time with his wife, children and grandchildren.  During vacations to the family Cabin in Hayward, Wis., he also chased White-tailed deer. Jerry and Marlene enjoyed playing bridge with friends, and he was always game for a round of Euchre or to tell a story. He lived a full and happy life and lived it by the mantra of his favorite song “My Way” by Frank Sinatra.


Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene Platt; two sons, Greg and Randy; two daughters, Natalie (Jamie) Ortega and Heather (Tom) Bandt; six grandchildren, Matthew Clayton, Heidi Clayton, Gared Platt, Joshua Bandt, Isabel Ortega and Ava Bandt; five great-grandchildren, Neil, Andrew, Ruby, Rhett and Graydon (and one more on the way); and his two sisters, Janet (Robert) Chastant and Carol (Phil) Sands; and brother, Curt (Barbara) Platt. He was preceded in death by his parents, Graydon and Jeanette Platt.

To Marlene, Natalie, Heather and the entire Platt family: A very big salute to Jerry! I am so sorry to hear of the passing of this wonderful man. I loved stopping at his stand at the Dane County Farmers' Market, where each week we would exclaim (or complain) about the Packers, tell jokes, and share stories. He was always giving me a free squash or an extra tomato. He always made my day a better one. I will remember him with much fondness and appreciation--a man of great substance and kindness, to be sure. I so wish I could be at his memorial! My deepest sympathy to the entire Platt family. I have the best memories from childhood there and much of it centered around your family. Whether it was down the street in the pool, at the farm, cabin or Sanibel, "Mr. Platt" was a wonderful man. He was family.

Marlene, You probably don't remember me, but often I came to the Hilldale farmers market when you were there. You often chided me when I bought hanging baskets elsewhere before I bought from you. Your produce was first rate. I always enjoyed talking with you. During this summer when I visited the Hilldale farmers market, Brenda kept me up to date on Jerry's condition. I prayed for you and him during this stressful time. Please take are of yourself. The loss is great but remember the good times. Hope to see you next year! Sincerely, Connie Malak
