Obituary

MADISON - James Charles “Jim” Deneen, age 79, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born on June 18, 1943, in Madison, Wis., the son of James and Bernice (Uptgraw) Deneen.


Jim graduated from Madison Central High School in 1961. He married Elizabeth Ann Zimmer on Oct. 4, 1969, in Madison.  Jim worked as a mechanic for the Wisconsin State Patrol for many years before his retirement.


Jim had a passion for model cars and was a proud mechanic. He was a member of the Model A Car Club. He had made many lifelong friends over the years from the Model A Club and enjoyed the time spent tinkering or fixing things with them, especially carburetors. Jim also enjoyed going to car swap meets and shows.


Jim is survived by his sisters, Janice Deneen and Sandra Gillis; niece, Amy Gillis and her son, Justin; nephew, Brad Gillis; cousins, Sharon Deneen, Lynne Deneen, Ron Gillette and Mary Gillette Blonigen; sister-in-law, Lillian Zimmer; brothers-in-law, John Sherman and John Ward; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elizabeth; brother-in-law, Francis Zimmer; and sisters-in-law, Jeanette Sherman and Norma Ward.

I had the privilege of working with Jim for his entire career at the Wisconsin State Patrol, he always took extra care of me. If I stopped at District 1 Headquarters he would always ask me if I needed anything. He always managed too find what I wanted and many, many times more then I requested. He was no.# 1 in my book, just a wonderful person to work around. I can't remember stopping at District at Jim didn't take time to at least say hi. Just so happy to have been a friend and known Jim. My "GOD" be with you and the family. He was a wonderful human being.

I'm very sorry to hear about Jim's passing. When I moved into the neighborhood some 26 years ago, Betsey and Jim were walking and stopped and introduced themselves. He asked me if I knew a Ralph from The Echo Tavern long ago? I said, he was my grandfather and the stories started! He even had some old pictures he gave me. He will be greatly missed but now he's back with Betsey and I'm sure he pain free and overjoyed to be back with his love. Rest in peace Jim. Doreen Nachreiner
