Obituary

MADISON - Melvin "Mel" Casto, age 74, of Madison, passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. He had been courageously battling Parkinson’s Disease for over 10 years. He was born on March 13, 1948, in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Charles Casto and Evalyn Martindale. He was united in marriage to Barbara Frank on Aug. 25, 1973.

Mel graduated from Beaverdam High School (Ohio) and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He earned an associate degree in Accounting in Madison, Wis. Mel retired from the State of Wisconsin as an Account Specialist over 30 years. He also owned and operated MBC Photography, where he captured many weddings and events.

Mel was heavily involved in the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association and was a past president of the Dane County Youth Hockey Association. He loved traveling for hockey with his three boys, whom he was very proud of. Mel loved nature, movies, and music. He loved to sing and sang “We’ve Only Just Begun” to his wife Barbara on their wedding day.

Mel is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Brandon (Kristine) Casto and their children, Evan and Cecily; son, Barrett (Jennifer) Casto and their children, Xanica and Rafael; son, Jordan (Amanda) Casto and their children, Roman and Luca; sister-in-law, Patricia (John) Cox; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Kathryn Minnard, Janet Harshman and Agnes Casto; and brother, Phillip Casto.

A special thanks and appreciation to the hard work and dedication for Mel’s caregivers Barbara Joy, Tracy, Amy and Christian.

A memorial service will be held at Gunderson East Funeral And Cremation Care, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 12 noon on Thursday, April 28, 2022, with longtime dear friend who introduced the couple over 50 years ago, Bonnie Pribbenow-Paddock, presiding. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.

I worked with Mel, at the state, on the KIDS Project, back in the 1990's. I had just started watching Badger Hockey. When he found that out, that was the start of our discussions about his boys and all the hockey trips he was going on. I learned a lot from him. So sorry for your loss. A Great Man, he will be missed. I worked with Mel in the early days of the KIDS system. He was knowledgeable about the work and became a friendly person to chat with. I remember him talking Hockey. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of loss.
