MADISON - Lowell E. Hammer, age 88, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 22, 2022. He was surrounded by his family. He was born on Feb. 2, 1934, in Lone Rock Wis., the son of Einar and Magna Hammer.

While working at Hult’s Chevrolet, he met and married Mary McGinnis. They were married for 66 wonderful years and, along with their family, shared a lifetime of cherished memories. Being a kind and dependable father was of the utmost importance to Lowell. He was a gentle and giving person, always willing to help a neighbor or friend.

If Lowell was not spending quality time with his beloved family and friends, he loved tinkering with cars, anything mechanical, working on things around the house and in the garage, and camping. Lowell loved cars and worked as a certified mechanic at Hult's Chevrolet, Thorstad Chevrolet, and the City of Madison for many years.

Lowell is survived by his loving wife, Mary. They had four children, Lisa (Peter) Hussey, Dana (Terry) Hammer, Camilla (Patrick) Corcoran and Paula (Jim) Holden. Mary and Lowell have been blessed with 11 grandchildren, Alex Lindsey, Kaitlin (Lindsey) Davis, Taylor (Lindsey) Bain, Alyssa (Hammer) Hyde, Kyle (Molly) Hammer, Patrick, Madeleine and Charlie Corcoran, and Emily, Abby and Claire Holden. They also have four great-grandchildren. Lowell is survived by his very special sister, Lois Seymour; his sisters-in-law, Martha Ritchie and Judy O’Neill; and many nieces and nephews. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law; his brother, Einar; and many other family members.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Dennis Catholic Church, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, on Friday, May 27,2022, with Father Randy Timmerman presiding. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass. A burial will be held at Roselawn Gardens, Monona, Wis., following the service. A luncheon will follow back at the church after the burial.


The family would like to thank Dr. Al Musa and the staff at SSM East Clinic, All Saints Assisted Living and Four Winds Manor for their compassionate care of Lowell. Memorials may be made to Lily’s Fund for Epilepsy Research or St. Dennis Catholic Church.

Our paths crossed while working together at Motor Equipment on North First Street for the City of Madison. Lowell was a good man and always expressed a deep pride of family and faith. As a mechanic, fixing cars wasn’t just a job; it was an activity he enjoyed. He had a genuine appreciation for the styling, engineering and sheer beauty of autos from the golden age of the 1950's and 60's. I am grateful that we had the time we did as co-workers and were able to share some memorable moments. I remember Lowel growing up living across the street. When my car was in a accident when I was grown-I looked out my window and there he was. Looking at my car and giving advise. He did the same thing when my sister was in a accident. I looked out my window and there her was. Always liking to help and talk. So sorry for the family. RIP
