Obituary

MIDDLETON - Allen Jeffrey “Jeff” Martin, age 78, of Middleton, passed away on Monday, Dec. 13, 2021.


Born and raised in Michigan, Jeff was a true Spartan, receiving his degrees from Michigan State University, earning his Ph.D. in 1969.  Following graduation, Jeff worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Princeton, W.Va., and then as a professor for the University of Wisconsin-Madison Extension. Following his retirement, Jeff began a second career as a photographer. He also volunteered with the Middleton Historical Society and Demeter and wherever needed.


Jeff will be missed by his family for his ability to be there when needed but also allowing them to grow.  He loved fly fishing but most of all he loved the challenge of catching and releasing a fish that he caught on a fly that he had tied.  


Jeff is survived by his wife, Jan; sons, Joel (Mary) and Jonathan (Erika) Martin; grandchildren, McKenna and Jack Martin; sister, Sharon Olney; and sister-in-law, Georgia (Art) Ellwanger.


A Celebration of Jeff’s Life will be held at LAKEVIEW PARK, 6300 Mendota Ave., Middleton, on Sunday, May 22, 2022. The celebration will begin at 2 p.m. with a time of gathering from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.  


Memorials may be made in Jeff’s name to the Middleton Historical Society or to the family for a UW-Madison Forestry Department Scholarship in Jeff’s name. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Jeff was a special person and I am grateful that I knew him and benefited from his knowledge of forestry. I met him when we bought woodland and was able to obtain advice from Jeff and interview him for articles to pass information along to other woodland owners. I'm heartbroken to have learned that my good friend and all-around Middleton Good Neighbor Jeff Martin passed away today. Jeff will be sorely missed in this community--such a positive spirit and always a smile and a good word. He and Jan Martin together have been outstanding residents and friends to many with so much good work accomplished. Jeff freely gave of his time for the Middleton Area Historical Society having served as president for the past 5 years. Also, he could always be seen around town taking pictures that would show up in the Middleton Times-Tribune and the Middleton Review. We'll truly miss you Jeff, and I'll still be looking for you in spirit at those pie and ice cream socials. My heart goes out to Jan and the family in mourning this wonderful soul, neighbor, community member, husband, father and grandfather.

I am heartbroken and sad that Jeff has passed. My thoughts have been with Jan and Joel and Jon and families every day since. Jeff has been a good friend and an amazing advocate for the Middleton Area Historical Society. He never ceased to amaze me with his creative talent as a photographer. Most recently, he and Jan showed me his frames made out of wood, which were as beautiful as the photo inside. Viewing their garden was an incredible treat, and I know that they thoroughly enjoyed sharing their plants with me, even though they knew neither of my thumbs were green. (Hostas grow better if you don't plant them upside down). In fact, one of the last times we saw Jeff and Jan was when they dropped off some plants for us. They were even able to chat with Scott on his bike, which made Scott's day. We will miss him! Rest In Peace, Jeff. Ruth and Scott Bachmeier
