Obituary
MCFARLAND/MADISON - Charlotte Grace Edwards passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 18, 1920, in Madison, the daughter of Charles and Gaea (Holtan) Kittleson of Sun Prairie. Charlotte was a graduate of Sun Prairie High School and Madison Business College. She married Robert "Bob" Edwards on April 3, 1943, at Burke Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed. They celebrated nearly 73 years of marriage before Bob's death on March 4, 2016.
Charlotte worked as a legal secretary during World War II. After raising her children, she served as church secretary and parish worker at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. At the time of her death, she was the oldest member of Our Saviour's.
Charlotte was a founding member of the Ruth Guild, a member of the Women's Aid Society and Bethany Auxiliary. She served in many capacities for the Missionary Society because of her abiding faith in Jesus and belief in spreading the Word.
Charlotte loved entertaining family and friends, gardening, playing bridge and traveling in the U.S. and abroad with special trips to Uruguay, Norway, and Israel. She had a passion for her Norwegian heritage and genealogical research. She wrote many stories about her childhood on the farm during the Depression.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and brothers, Earl and Irving. It was my privilege to share some time with Charlotte during the years I lived at Skaalen Village. We I were regulars in the little knitting group, an intimate setting in which she told stories of the old days on the farm, a memory I treasure. Her kindness shone as brightly as her smile. Her insight into potentially difficult situations set an example from which we all could learn. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family she loved so dearly.

This wonderful lady was like a second mother to me. During my growing-up years (age 4-15) I lived across the street from her on East Dean Avenue in Madison, and her daughter Cheryl was my best friend. I spent many happy hours in Charlotte’s lovely home, which was always immaculate and smelled of delicious foods she was preparing in the kitchen. (The only one that didn’t smell so delicious to me was the lutefisk!) Charlotte always seemed like the perfect mother to me – she was so attentive to the needs of her family. I am grateful that I was able to spend some time visiting with her and Cheryl in 2019, just after Charlotte’s 99th birthday. She was still the same vibrant, kind and loving person I had always remembered her to be. We should all be so fortunate to live such a long, healthy and happy life as Charlotte did. I will miss her! I send big hugs and heartfelt condolences to Cheryl, Gayl, Ron and their families.
