Obituary

MADISON - Muriel Aurora Anderson, 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at Chamomile Assisted Living.

Muriel was born on Sept. 6, 1922, in Madison, Wis.  She was the youngest of three children of Max and Ella Pacholski.  Muriel lived her entire life on the east side of Madison.  She graduated from Madison East High School and then began working as a bookkeeper for Dane County.  On weekends she worked as a carhop at the drive-in across from the Kipp Corporation on Atwood Avenue. There she met the love of her life, Morline Anderson, who then worked at Kipp.  On May 2, 1946, she and Morline married, after his return from India where he was stationed with the U.S. Army Aircorp during World War II. Together they had three children.

At the age of 44, Muriel returned to work as a library assistant for the Madison Metropolitan School District, continuing in that role until her retirement at the age of 80.  After retiring, she continued as a volunteer library assistant at Sennett and Wright middle schools well into her late 80s.

Family was everything to Muriel.  She loved family holidays and especially enjoyed backyard BBQs, attending grandchildren’s activities, and later in life the weekends spent at her son, Mark’s, cabin “up north.”

Muriel is survived by her children, Mark (Ellen) Anderson and Marcia (Steve) Verhage; grandchildren, Nathaniel (Tricia) Verhage, Alicia Rice, Molly (Ryan) Swiderski, Max (Maureen) Anderson, Kellie (Nathan) Haines, Mitchell (Kalin LeBrun) Anderson and Amanda (Vince) Schmitz; great-grandchildren, Anthony (AJ), Alexus and Terek Verhage; Claire, Lyla and Elliot Swiderski; Evy Anderson; Maddux, Weston and Hudson Haines; and Maverick and Kolter Schmitz. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Morline; infant son, Donald; her parents; her brother, Alvin; sister, Janet; and granddaughter, Maureen.

A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 18, 2022. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to the Dane County Humane Society.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Chamomile Assisted Living and Agrace HospiceCare who assisted with her care. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Mark and Marcia, and everyone in your family, I was so sorry to hear of Aunt Muriel’s passing. She always had a smile on her face, whether it was at a family gathering, or in the Sennett library when I was in middle school, or running into her at the grocery store. I was happy I was able to spend the evening with her a couple years ago when I was back in WI. Losing such a wonderful person is always difficult but she will live on in the joy of your memories of family time spent with her. Our sincerest sympathies to all of you, Dave and Gail Herrmann

I worked with Muriel at Sennett for many years. She told me she was thinking of retiring when we started using computers. She said she was too old to learn all that new stuff, but learn it she did. She would laugh when I reminded her that she had been going to quit. She said she was so glad she hadn't as she would have been so bored at home. I also remember how much she liked that yellow VW and often saw her around town in it. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I am sorry I cannot attend the visitation but have to take an elderly friend to the doctor Monday morning. Barb Van Loenen Sennett Middle School 1969-2001

Our hugs and prayers to the whole family. Muriel was not only my aunt, but also my godmother and will always have a special place in my heart. I have so many wonderful memories of backyard picnics and Christmas Eve celebrations on Spaanem Ave. I have always been impressed by how she transitioned to the new role of single mom after unexpectedly losing the love of her life, Morline. How many people can say that they started a 36+ year career at age 44? During my visits with Muriel over the last few years, she loved telling stories about her kids & grandkids, as well as her beloved cats. Aunt Muriel will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mark and Ellen, we send our deepest condolences to you and your family on the passing of your dearly loved mother. We know how difficult this must be because you took such good and loving care of her over the years, and you were so very devoted to her. Unfortunately we will be unable to attend the memorial because we are in Minneapolis this weekend. We will be thinking of you and saying a prayer for Muriel, you and your family. With sympathy, Wes and Sue Zuege
