Obituary

MADISON - Alice Mae Kvamme, age 99, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021. She was born on Sept. 11, 1921, to Melvin and Ada (Johnson) Byom. Alice graduated from Madison East High School in 1939 and attended St. Olaf College. She married Manford C. Kvamme on Oct. 23, 1942, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Madison. A life-long resident of Madison’s east side, Alice’s life centered on her family and church. She had strong bonds with the dairy-farming roots of her parents, aunts, uncles and cousins in the Coulee country of the Black River Valley, north of LaCrosse. She traveled extensively, especially in Norway, where she celebrated her family's cultural heritage. Alice was a longtime employee and department manager at Sears Roebuck and Company in Madison. She also volunteered in many areas at Bethel Lutheran, including teaching Sunday School, Alter Guild, Elizabeth Circle, organizing the church’s archives, participating in ladies’ groups, and being a member of the church’s XYZ Club. Alice is survived by her sons, Michael M. (Elaine Jensen) Kvamme of Clayton, Ga. and David J. (Elizabeth Bryan) Kvamme of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren, Christina (Kurt) Gough, Daniel Kvamme, Erik (Lisa Maticic) Kvamme, John (Stacy) Kvamme and Curtis (Denise Zitnik) Kvamme; great-grandchildren, Michael and Annika Gough; daughter-in-law, Nancy Kvamme; her nephews, Dale (Deb) and Dean (Ricki) Holmen; niece, Paula (Dave) Erickson; and former daughter-in-law, Beverly Kvamme. She was preceded in death by her son, Daniel C. Kvamme; her husband, Manford; and sister, Jane Holmen. A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive., Madison at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021. Alice was a fund of knowledge about the history of Bethel Lutheran Church and the many, many stories associated with the church, Madison, cultural traditions, and life in Madison, Wisconsin. She was a precious friend and a resource for me when Bethel celebrated 150 years and again when the Steensland House was enjoying a "rebirth," as a group at of us at Bethel searched through the files and were rewarded with so much information. Most people have no idea how organized the Bethel Archives are and how rich the collection is with newspaper clippings, old church records, and momentous descriptions of the activities of a faithful community. I spent many hours talking with her and hearing about the church and her family and life in Madison on many Tuesdays when the Library Board met. Bethel was blessed with these women who have preserved a life long history of Bethel. Thank you, Alice. You are a gem! Lynne Krainer

Dear Michael, David and family, So sorry to hear of Alice's passing. I know my mother and father were honored to have Alice and Manford stand up for them at their wedding. They treasured their lifelong friendship with Alice and Manford. I have fond memories of visits to their house on Williamson Street, and later to their new house.
