It was so long ago that I attended Sauk Trail Elementary, but Mr. Gray is one of the things that always stuck with me from my time there. I was living in a single parent home, trying to overcome some physical and emotional hurdles like so many young children do. I don’t know if it was just me, or if it’s just how he was, but I have so many memories of him taking the time to visit with me and take an interest in how I was doing. I’m sure he was great with all of his students, but he always made me feel special, and it still means the world to me 30 years later. He was truly a great man, and I’m very sad to hear this news. All my best to his family. He was a one of a kind educator, and he’ll stay in our hearts forever.

What a guy. He was indeed everyone's hero . He was mine in Jr High . Encouraging and supportive. Taught me humility . He always made time for any kid . May he rest in peace .

Gene is a man who made a difference in Quail Ridge and in the lives of others. My favorite memories are when I was outside when Gene and Marge would drive by and either slow for an exchange of waves or stop for a neighborly chat. Fine people.
