Obituary

MADISON-Margaret Elizabeth “Betty” Lowe passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at Agrace HospiceCare. She was born on Dec. 9, 1938, in Arkansas, and was the only child of Margaret Kimbaugh and Schuyler Lowe who preceded her in death. Soon after her birth, her father, a prominent financial planner, moved his family to Washington DC where he worked as a city manager. Betty moved to Madison to take a position as librarian with the State of Wisconsin. Though she adapted well to her Midwest home with its northern winters, she never lost her “southern bell” charm, always decked out and adorned with jewelry, painted fingernails, but always sensible midwestern shoes. Betty was a proud member of OA (Overeaters Anonymous) and managed to enjoy more than a 150 pound weight loss that she maintained for many years. She lived the 12 steps carrying her message of recovery from both alcohol (AA, Alcoholics Anonymous) and over eating. She sponsored many newcomers to AA and OA, and attended meetings in Madison, Monona and Fitchburg for many years. Betty is survived by her cousins, Mary Leming Connor of New York, Loris Butterfield of Washington D.C., and Elaine Jones of Iowa. A memorial service celebrating Betty’s life will be at COMMUNITY OF HOPE, UCC, 7118 Old Sauk Rd., Madison, at 4 p.m., on Saturday, March 30, 2019, with the Rev. Sonja Ingebritsen presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dane County Humane Society. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com. Gunderson Fitchburg Funeral & Cremation Care 2950 Chapel Valley Rd. It was about two decades ago that our mutual love of animals brought us together, and Betty and I became instant friends. She was a warm, loving woman, who would always have your back in times of need. My favorite memory of Betty will always be her visit to my home in upstate New York. She sat at my kitchen table, and my Siamese cat, Pree, leapt right to her lap. She adopted “Miss Betty” at that moment, and owned the lap through her entire visit. If Pree approved, you knew you were looking at someone who was goodness to the depth of their soul. I know that goodness will continue to shine on Betty’s loved ones from Heaven. Journey on, my dear friend. May your lap always be warmed by your beloved pets gone beyond, and may your path through the starlight be eternally joyful.

Betty was a wonderful lady full of charm and kindness. She touched many lives with kind humor and generous acceptance of others. I never saw her leave anyone sadder after they saw her than before. Having shed this body, I'm sure you're off to the next adventure. You'll be sadly missed, Betty. You already are.

It’s hard to summarize a 22 year friendship in a paragraph, especially when it’s about Betty. I met her through an animal related email list group. Betty posted that she needed some help with one of her cats. I called her and we instantly connected and became friends. Betty was a blessing to have as a friend. She was articulate, insightful, had a great sense of humor and laugh, and was generous and genuinely concerned with her friends lives. Betty was an enthusiastic advocate for those she loved and for the passions that engaged her heart. I was fortunate to have Betty as my guest and show her around the Finger Lakes Region while she attended a workshop in upstate New York. Later, she hosted me as her guest when I attended a workshop in Madison that she sponsored. I made several lifelong friends in Madison because of Betty. I have gifts in my home that warm my heart every time I look at them. They emit a special energy from her heart because she carefully selected gifts for each of her friends. I have a heart full of treasures that I will cherish and be grateful for. Dear Betty, you will be greatly missed, forever loved and affectionately remembered. God Bless You!
