Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Beverly M. Schwierske, age 89, of Mount Horeb, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. She was born on Oct. 18, 1934, to Melvin and Beulah (Johnson) Knudson on the family farm near Blue Mounds.


Beverly graduated from Mount Horeb High School and Platteville State Teachers College (now UW-Platteville). She began her career as a teacher at the age of 20 at Tyvand School, a one-room rural school in the Town of Perry. She also taught at other rural schools, including Blue Mounds and Ridgeview, where she was also principal, before finishing her career at the Mount Horeb Primary School.


Beverly was married to Frederick H. Schwierske in 1956 and he preceded her in death in 2005. She is survived by her children, Becky (Len) Betley, Frederick C. (Donna) Schwierske, Chuck (Cindy) Schwierske and Bruce Schwierske; grandchildren, Linda (Shawn) Ducat, Jamie Schwierske, Kelly Schwierske, Ella (Scott Smith) Schwierske and Eric Schwierske; and brother, Allen Knudson. She is also survived by her longtime companion, Lee Fassbender, and his family.


Beverly was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Melbourne and Dennis Knudson; and special friend, Edner Norland.


A funeral service will be held at EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 315 E. Main St., Mount Horeb, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2023, with Pastor John Twiton presiding, followed by a luncheon at the church. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON CAMACHO MOUNT HOREB FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 500 N. Eighth St., Mount Horeb, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday. Burial will be held at a later date.


Beverly’s family would like to thank the staff at Ingleside Communities and Agrace HospiceCare for their care.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be gifted to Beverly’s favorite organizations: the Mount Horeb Landmarks Foundation, Mount Horeb Public Library, Dane County Humane Society or a charity of your choice.


Beverly was a wonderful mom, grandma and friend and will be greatly missed.

Bev was a shining star of vitality — in everything she did. Caring, warm, concerned, helpful, and loving…..she loved hard and was loved by many. May her family find peace in that legacy she has left us all.

My first memory of Beverly was at her wedding. I was little but I remember that she gave the wedding cake top to my mother, Emma Lund, to keep in our freezer until their one year anniversary. We had a big freezer in our kitchen and for one year we rearranged our frozen food around that cake. Our family was fortunate enough to have both Bev and Fred for teachers. Great memories of both. Thinking fondly of all of my Wisconsin relatives as I reflect on the life of my "favorite girl cousin". She will be missed) In the past few years, the distance has made it harder to keep in touch, but I remember the many good talks we had when I stayed at her house over the years. As she was 13 years older than me, we really became friends in our more mature years! We shared a love of plants, anything Norwegian, and of course stories about our pets. Any visit I made to Mt. Horeb, included at least a lunch at the Grumpy Troll if not as a welcome guest in her home while I visited other family in the area. Her passing is a loss, to not only family and friends but to the community. She was a "true historian" and could find out the history , good or bad of most residents in the area. I wish now , I had taken better notes! Tomorrow , as you say good bye to Bev, I will be saying my own goodbyes. She will be missed by my girls and Brian, who I think she always favored! Mrs Schwierske was my favorite teacher growing up! She was one my 2nd grade teachers and I always loved her. She knew my grandfather well from bowling or playing cards and it was always fun running into my "teacher" when grandpa met my parents. She was such a beautiful woman in and out.

My wife and I had many a good time with Fred and Bev. She was a very nice lady to say the least.
