Obituary
MONONA-Gerald H. "Jerry" Monson, age 80, of Monona, passed away suddenly on Monday, Feb. 26, 2018, at UW-Hospital from injuries sustained in a fall. He was born on Dec. 15, 1937, in Fargo, N.D., the son of Herbert and Cordelia (Westrum) Monson. He married Bonnie Monson on Aug. 9, 1958. He worked as an architect for Flad and Associates for 45 years, retiring in 2008, at 70 years old. Jerry had an excellent sense of humor and a love of family. Bonnie would say his second job was a stand-up comedian. He also acted in a social play group with his wife for many years. Jerry was a creative, detail oriented man, who would draw everything, a trait he shared with daughter, Jana, an accomplished artist. He loved music, singing and dancing, and found humor in all things. A devoted father, and a loving husband, he would be there for all his family. Jerry is survived by his wife, Bonnie; sons, David Monson (Sandy DeMoss), Mike (Barbara) Monson and Tom Monson; daughter, Jana (Steven) Gerbitz; grandchildren, Adam Monson, Mitch Monson, Ethan Monson (Katie Edgington); with great-grandchild, Hazel Monson; sisters, Janet (Richard) Pratt and Judy Ruliffson; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at MONONA METHODIST CHURCH, 606 Nichols Rd., Monona, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday, March 5, 2018, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday. Dear Bonnie, Tom, Mike and Monson family,
We are so sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. We will long remember Jerry's humor and wit. Jerry always had a funny story and it was always worth listening to. Jerry worked on our house along side Tom and our beautiful home is a testament to his skill and detailed work. Jerry will be missed by many.

Dear Bonnie and family, Gerry and I worked together at Flad for many years. He was such a terrific person and architect. A great talent, a delightful person to be around and a sense of humor that was matchless. When someone needed mentoring, Gerry was the guy to do it, as he was patient, very good at what he did and a patient and kind teacher. One of my favorite times at Flad was watching Gerry do this Guido Sarducci (from Saturday night live many years ago) impression for the in-house Christmas party. He had that dry sense of humor and his timing was superb. (his Italian-ish accent was something to behold). All who know Gerry are deeply saddened by the loss of such a terrific man and friend. We will hold in our hearts.

Dear Aunt Bonnie and family: Steve and I were shocked and saddened by the news of Jerry's death. He was soft spoken but his wit, humor and ability to make one laugh was awesome! Although we will not be with you for his funeral please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers. With heart felt sympathy and love... Steve Hietala and Betsy Adams Hietala and family

I loved the man.
His spirit was buoyant. He loved fun.
Years after I had last seen Jerry, he jumped up from the Miller Park tailgate lot as he recognized me walking to the ball park. He was glad to see me, and I him! but he wanted me to settle a debate he was having with his buddies. I think it was about who was on the cover of the first Sports Illustrated magazine. I settled it in his favor, without knowing. He had it right. Of course. (This must have been 3-4 years ago.)
I'd say he had a lucky family with him as hubby and dad.
Bless him.
God's doing it.
Love,
Paul Francis

Dear Bonnie and family. I had the privilege of working with Gerry at Flad for over 20 years. He was a dedicated worker and always a good project team member. We shared a love of fishing, and shared many fish stories. He was one of the first to learn computer drafting in the office, and was a teacher to others in the office. I am saddened by your loss, and will always have fond memories of Gerry.
