Obituary

MADISON-Lyle A. Schroeder, age 84, of Madison, passed away on Monday, June 18, 2018. He was born on June 14, 1934, in Oshkosh, the son of Walter and Elizabeth (Kirschling) Schroeder. Lyle graduated from Oshkosh High School, class of 1952. Following high school he attended UW-Stout. He married Sheryl Meixl on Jan. 28, 1956, and were blessed with five children. They made Madison their home when Lyle took a job with Northwest Airlines. After a 14 year career with the airline, Lyle began working for Koepcke Travel Agency. He then set out and started the Key Travel Agency. Lyle developed many lasting friendships and enjoyed planning vacations of a lifetime. He and Sheryl also enjoyed traveling the world. Lyle was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Wisconsin National Guard. He believed in giving back to others with gifts or talents and spent time volunteering at St. Vincent DePaul and many other organizations. He enjoyed outings with friends, playing cards, hunting and playing in golf leagues. His true joy was spending time with his family. Lyle is survived by his wife, Sheryl; daughter, Debra Ward; sons, Daniel Schroeder, Douglas Schroeder, David (Dana) Schroeder and Dean Schroeder; brother, Donald (Barbara) Schroeder; sister, Carol (Arthur) Schneider; sisters-in-law, Betty Davis and Kathy Meixl; nine grandchildren, Matthew Ward, Andrea (Javier) Robles, Lucas (Vanessa) Ward, Shannon Schroeder, Melissa Schroeder, McKenzie Schroeder, Paige Schroeder, Tess Schroeder and Mason Schroeder; great-granddaughters, Avery Ward and Liliana Ward; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Rd., Madison, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday June 28, 2018, with Father Randy Timmerman presiding. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, and also at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to family. Uncle Lyle was an amazing man.He was a second father to me and I will never forget the memories we shared.He was one of the nicest people I've ever known. He will not be forgotten. When i started working for Northwest Airlines in 1959 i was so fortunate to have the opportunity to work and learn so much from Lyle. He had the patience with customers like no one else and taught me so much in customer service. My sympathy to all the family and he will be missed by many. Ron Holtz

Uncle Lyle had a grin that sticks in your mind forever! I have some really fun memories including him being the first person to ever show me how to hold a pool cue and hit some pool balls - all in the Schroeder family basement! I remember Uncle Lyle and my dad sitting in the firelight and cracking jokes as both of our families camped together in Pennsylvania Dutch! I also remember him playing Michigan Rummy at our dining room table in Virginia! ...and always that perpetual smile! To Aunt Sheryl, Debbie, Dan, Doug, David, and Dean... We are sending our love and prayers with many of my fond memories! I'm sure he and dad are sharing some jokes in heaven right now and smiling down upon us all! My brother Lyle was a warm, fine person. I can say this even though he was the typical brother growing up. He had a car with a rumble seat and sometimes would give me a ride. He had a darkroom in our basement for developing photos and allowed me in just once (after I begged to see inside). He also had a great love staying with his grandparents (our mother's parents) on their farm during summers as a teen and helping out with the work. As an adult he always had a quip, a fond greeting, and was always interested in what was happening with your life. He was loved and will be greatly missed. Carol Schneider (nee Schroeder)
