Obituary
MADISON-Gerhardt J. Steinke, age 84, of Madison, passed away on Friday, Dec. 22, 2017, at Meriter Hospital. He was born on Sept. 15, 1933, in Albert Lea, Minn., son of the late Gustav and Emma (Olson) Steinke. After graduating from Newfolden Lakes High School in Newfolden, Minn., Gerhardt attended Moorehead State University where he earned his bachelor's degree in mathmatics. He was employed with Milwaukee Area Technical College for over 20 years until retiring. Gerhardt was a member of numerous organizations including the American Youth Hostel Assn., League of American Bicyclists; Sierra Club; and the Internatioinal Marching League. He had a variety of interests including bicycling, hiking, and traveling throughout Europe. Survivors include his son, Karl (Neera) Steinke; grandchildren, Kai, Tristan and Emma Steinke; special friend, Lotte Waldmann; and ex-wife, Ruth Lambach. Family services will be arranged for a later date in Europe.

I worked with Gerhardt back in the seventies and eighties, to develop bicycle tours around Wisconsin. He was a fixture in the biking community, and dedicated to the promotion of two wheeled travel. Easy to talk to and usually upbeat, I have many a fond memory of him ! So long old friend !!

I was a student of Herr Steinke in the early '80's for Introduction of AC & DC Fundamentals. I was impressed with his tenacity of teaching methods. The lessons he taught in class carried me in my carreer in Biomedical Elecrtonics for nearly 40 years. "If in doubt, always measure,measure, and measure!"

I met Gery as the spouse of my mother. They met at the end of 2008 or the beginning of 2009. For my mother it was a great luck to meet Gery. Gery always made plans for traveling and they traveled a lot. He had a lot of energy and was always interested and helpful.
We miss him.

My favorite memory of Gerhardt is when he told me that our son Karl had taken the best of my traits and the best of his traits and left the rest.
I'm grateful that you spent the last decade of your life hiking in Europe, reading and listening to the German language and finding love and comfort in your relationship with Lotte. You found a home in your Fatherland at last.
