LODI, WI/ROCKTON, IL-Ronald Lee Smith, age 59, of Lodi, WI/Rockton, IL, passed away on Monday, Sept. 11, 2017, surrounded by friends and family at home. He was born Oct. 4, 1957 in Rockford, IL to Robert Lee and Leona Alice (Ahmer) Smith. He was a machinist/fabricator at Amerock in Rockford for 25 years before relocating to Madison, WI. He worked most recently for the Middleton-Cross Plains School District as a custodian for 9 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, football, camping, riding his HD Sportster, car shows, and enjoying his grandchildren. He is survived by his son, Nicholas (Rebecca) Smith of Lodi, WI; daughters, Jillian (David) Martinez of Belvidere, IL, Samantha Smith of Lodi, WI; brothers, Roger (Diana) Smith of Beloit, WI, Randy (Becky Joe) Smith of Rockford, IL; sister, Roberta Hamel of Machesney Park, IL; grandchildren, Annika and Aaron Smith, Anastacia Martinez, Isabelle Smith; numerous nephews/nieces; and extended family, the Marking and Schlender families. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Gordon Hamel. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, WI at Noon on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and also from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Friday. A Celebration of Life will also be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the AMERICAN LEGION, 221 W. Main St., Rockton, IL. Memorials may be made to UW Carbone Cancer Center. Every time I saw Ron working at MHS he was always putting his best foot forward with a great attitude. He was hardworking and kind. Per our few conversations, I knew he was struggling, but you would never know it. He certainly taught me what it looks like to rise above your circumstances, do your best every day, and to not let your troubles define you. I am grateful that I got to meet him and learn from him. I'm so very sorry for your loss.
