Julia M. Frohreich

MADISON – Julia McGlasson Frohreich, a loving family member, talented elementary/middle school teacher, and devoted friend, passed away on Jan. 11, 2017, after spending 80 years enriching our world. Julia was born to Hugh and Isabel (Appleby) McGlasson on Sept. 24, 1936, in Indianapolis, Ind. During her childhood and teenage years, Julia's family moved; they followed her father's career as a Methodist minister, and later a superintendent in Crawfordsville, Ind. Despite the relocation in her younger years- Julia excelled in her studies. She had a constant thirst for knowledge and passion for learning, which never faded. Julia developed a special interest in music and performed in the school orchestra for seven years. She graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1954 and enrolled at Purdue University in the fall. At Purdue, she majored in Foods and Nutrition, and minored in Chemistry- graduating with her bachelor's degree in 1958. A hard-earned degree was not the only lasting outcome of attending Purdue. It was at Purdue that Julia met her future husband, Lloyd Frohreich. Julia and Lloyd spent two years writing letters to each other while he served his country in Korea. In the fall of 1957, Lloyd returned to Purdue to continue his education. The two were reunited and following a one-year courtship, he proposed and she accepted. With her father officiating, Lloyd and Julia were married at her father's church in Valparaiso, Ind. on Sept. 7, 1958. The relationship and marriage of Julia and Lloyd Frohreich has been admired by many for 58 years. The couple spent several years living in Lafayette, Ind. while he completed his PhD and they became a family of four. Daughters, Karen Ann Frohreich and Carlene Beth Frohreich were both born in Indiana. The family moved to Madison in 1969 where Lloyd assumed the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Administration at UW-Madison. A year later, Julia pursued a master's degree in Elementary Education at the UW-Madison. She received her degree in 1972 and immediately accepted a position with the McFarland School District. There, Julia taught fifth and sixth grade for 14 years, and taught fourth grade for another 14 years. In the meantime, Julia and Lloyd had become world travelers - she often brought different countries and cultures to life in her classroom for students to experience. Concluding a 28-year career, she retired. In retirement, she found a continuation of teaching in her role as a doting Grandmother to four grandchildren. Julia was considered an excellent teacher and had a niche for inspiring young individuals to succeed in every aspect of life. She is dearly missed, and her 'lessons' will forever be preserved and cherished by those who remain. The friends Julia made while teaching and during her 50-year membership in PEO sustained her through her last few months of life. Julia is survived by her husband, Lloyd Frohreich; daughters, Karen Gontarek of Cottage Grove, and Carlene Peterson of Farmington, Conn.; grandchildren, LeighAnn Gontarek, Ryan Gontarek, Cara Peterson, and Matthew Peterson; and two sisters, Ruth Severson of Pa, and Marcia Strong of Mich. Funeral services will be at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. The family would like to thank the numerous health professionals (since 2001) that guided Julia through cancer treatments and beyond. We especially appreciate the oncologists at the Dean Clinic and the UW Carbone Cancer Center. May God guide their continuing service and research. Family is also appreciative of the Oakwood Village staff and the Agrace Hospice Care staff who helped Julia and our family through the final stages of her life. A special thanks to Karen Gontarek for her exceptional attentiveness and care throughout the past few months. We are certain that Julia would be appreciative of any donations to fight cancer.
