MADISON - Robert J. Tormey, age 95, of Madison, passed away on Friday, Nov. 24, 2023, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born on Oct. 19, 1928, in Madison, Wis., the son of John and Clara (Schauf) Tormey.
Bob graduated from Madison East in 1946 and the University of Wisconsin in 1950 with an accounting degree. He married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Schmelzer, on June 19, 1948, in Madison.
He completed ROTC in college and was proud of his military career. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and later in the Army Reserves, retiring as a colonel.
Bob owned his own accounting firm, Robert Tormey and Associates. He was a charter member of St. Dennis Parish in Madison and was active in many church and school functions. Bob served as cubmaster of the Cub Scout Pack at St. Dennis for many years. He also enjoyed playing saxophone and singing. He played with the Monona band at retirement communities in the area, often joking that many in his audience were younger than he was. He volunteered for St. Vincent de Paul picking up donations from drop boxes and organizing other volunteers.
Robert is survived by his children; Jeffrey (Jean), Mark (Carol), Perry (Marilyn), Gail (Dean) Maly and Brian; daughter-in-law; Kay Tormey; brother, Donald (Audrey) Tormey; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; sons, Kevin and Joseph; and daughter-in-law, Kris Tormey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, with the Rev. Gary Krahenbuhl presiding. Entombment will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park. A visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Dennis Catholic Church, Agrace HospiceCare or to the charity of your choice.
