Obituary
MCFARLAND/MADISON/NEENAH - Joel Scott "Sherm" Sherman, passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Badger Prairie Health Care Center with his mother at his side. He was born on Feb. 12, 1953, in Madison, the son of Ralph D. Jr., and Irene (Thompson) Sherman.
Joel graduated from LaFollette High School in 1971, continuing his education at UW Eau Claire for two years majoring in music, then transferred to UW Oshkosh where he earned his degree in Social Work in 1976. He enjoyed music and choirs in both high school and college participating in numerous concerts and musicals. He worked as a social worker with Winnebago County for five years; then made a career change and was employed with Kimberly-Clark in Product Development for 23 years.
Joel was a motorcycle enthusiast all of his life. When the effects of multiple sclerosis became evident, he acquired a 'kit' from the Lehman Company and converted his treasured two-wheel Honda Goldwing to a three-wheeled trike. He enjoyed the local area 'bike' parades/shows, competitions, out of state Goldwing Rallies and tours. Playing golf was also a great time, especially some of the memorable rounds played with his dad. He was always a Badgers and Packers fan every season. Sharing holidays and special occasions with all the family were very special for everyone - even watching old family movies!
Joel is survived by his mother, Irene of McFarland and her 'Special Hallmark Friend', Laverne "Bub" Severson; sister, Susan Sherman (Clifford) Jackson of Hawthorn Woods, Ill.; niece, Breanne Jackson of Houston, Texas; nephew, Joshua (Emily) Jackson of Bartlett, Ill.; aunts, Rachel Thompson Severson/Hauge of Madison and Gladys (Robert) Thompson of Stoughton; and other special relatives, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Jr. in 2006; his grandparents, Ralph Sr. and Dora Moe Sherman, and Raymond J. Thompson and Myrtle Gaskin Thompson; uncles, Willard (Madelyn) Thompson, Robert C. Thompson and Norman H. Severson; aunt, Veryl Sherman (Jack) Kreigh; and cousin, John H. Severson.
