Obituary

MADISON - David Albert Hoppe, age 74, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023. The son of Wallace Hoppe and Irmgard Karnopp, he grew up in Kewaunee. After obtaining a degree from UW-Stout, he started his career in Stevens Point. From there he moved to Madison, working at East High School as a guidance counselor. He worked on issues ranging from college applications to truancy. Dave also worked evenings as an investment broker for Harbour Investments, helping teachers plan their retirements. He was an anti-war activist involved with Veterans for Peace. He believed Madison to be the best city in the world.


Dave met his beloved wife, Patty, in graduate school; they were married for 38 years. He is survived among others by his sons, Ben and Alex Hoppe; brother, Glenn Hoppe; sister, Jeannine Johnson; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patricia; and brothers, Keith and Daryll Hoppe.


A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, with the Rev. David Brynelson presiding. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.

Dave and I worked together at East High, played on the same softball team, and attended Brewers games together. Dave organized many social events and he and Patty introduced me to my future wife Ann. He took a personal interest in all of his students as a guidance counselor and displayed a strong work ethic. He had a positive impact on many lives and will be missed.

Dave and I were colleagues at East High where I enjoyed working with him as he presented guidance information to my classes and counseled students individually. He engaged with students easily with his down-to-earth and friendly presence. I am personally grateful to Dave for his recommendation to volunteer at Overture, which we shared for many years following retirement. Dave was a blessing for many and a true human being.
