Obituary

MADISON- Phyllis S. George, age 94, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Oakwood Prairie Ridge Seasons. She was born at home on the farm, on London Road, in Lake Mills Township, the daughter of Lloyd and Edna (Latsch) Strasburg.

Phyllis graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1948. She was married to Dean W. George on June 28, 1952.  Phyllis received her degree in education in 1952 and went on to teach in Janesville for five years, where her three sons were born. Later, they moved to Madison, and she taught at Frank Allis Elementary School and received her master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1968. Shortly after she got a job at Kennedy Elementary where she was a kindergarten teacher for 27 years, retiring in 1995.

Phyllis was an active member of Lakeview Moravian Church for many years.  As well as a proud contributor and supporter of Mount Morris. Over the past few years Phyllis became active within the Oakwood church community which she was very grateful for.

Phyllis enjoyed a family filled dinner with prayer, a home cooked meal and dessert. Traveling with family had always been important to Phyllis. She traveled with her granddaughter, Emily, starting at the age 8 around the U.S. and Canada. She always raved about the Clam Chowder out East. Phyllis was a very strong and independent woman. She often shared how appreciative she was of her boys the last few years when she needed additional help. She was absolutely delighted to have had her great-granddaughter, Hazel, these past three years. An opportunity many of her years do not share.

Phyllis is survived by her sons, Mark, Paul and Curt (Karen); granddaughter Emily (Brandon Ganser); great-granddaughter, Hazel; and sisters, Joan Allinder, Jerilyn (John) McFarlane. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean; her parents, Lloyd and Edna; and her sister, Arlene.

A funeral service will be held at OAKWOOD VILLAGE PRAIRIE RIDGE, 5565 Tancho Drive, Madison, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025. Burial will take place at Rock Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Oakwood from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.

I am so sorry for your loss Your Mom was an amazing woman. I first met her when my daughter had her as a teacher at Kennedy School. She was great with the kids. She also tutored my youngest daughter every week. She gave so selflessly for anyone she knew. You would never meet a more sincere and giving woman. I am sure you will all miss her but you will still have your memories Karen Corbett

As Principal of John F. Kennedy Elementary School, I was blessed to work with Kindergarten Teacher, Phyllis George for 9 years. Phyllis was a marvelous, dedicated. caring teacher. She was a great school staff contributor as well. I have many fond memories of our time together at J.F.K. Elementary School. Phyllis George will be missed by many.

Phyllis, was such a constant, kind, wise, and faith- filled person the 8 years I was her pastor at Lakeview Moravian! She was generous and very hospitable as my young family and I arrived in 1996. We are grateful to have known her. We offer all her family and friends, peace, support, resurrection power, and our prayers in this loss. Blessings, The Rev. Darrell Johnson
