MCFARLAND - Richard D. “Orangie” Doran passed away at his home, surrounded by the love of his family on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023.

Born on Feb. 6, 1937, Richard was the youngest of eight children of James and Helen (Anderson) Doran, growing up in Madison’s Greenbush area and attending Madison’s Central High School (Class of 1956). Richard worked for 41 years at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation as a reprographics technician, developing aerial photos for the official state map and for road construction projects. He served honorably in the U.S. Marine Reserves for 12 years.

Richard enjoyed the full range of sports - playing hockey as a youngster at Vilas Park to as an adult in the “Old Timers League” at Hartmeyer Ice Arena to attending the UW Badgers home games at the Dane County Colosseum on Friday nights to teaching his granddaughter, Melissa, to play and love hockey; playing touch football at Franklin Field; camping in the wilderness; and playing golf in his later years. Furthermore, he enjoyed fishing from setting out in a boat on Lakes Marie or Minocqua with his good friend, Oscar, to casting from the pier in Newport Beach Calif., with his nephew, John Pierre.

Richard is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann; his children, Barbara Jo, Elizabeth Doran-Flottmeyer (Lawrence) and James (Kelly Monigal); his granddaughter, Melissa; his sister, Lois Helen Schaefer; his brother, Donald Doran; and many nieces and nephews.
