Obituary

MCFARLAND - Richard D. “Orangie” Doran passed away at his home, surrounded by the love of his family on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2023.

Born on Feb. 6, 1937, Richard was the youngest of eight children of James and Helen (Anderson) Doran, growing up in Madison’s Greenbush area and attending Madison’s Central High School (Class of 1956).  He married his bride, Barbara Ann Cook, on Feb. 7, 1958. Together, they raised three children, Barbara Jo, Elizabeth and James.  Richard worked for 41 years at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation as a reprographics technician, developing aerial photos for the official state map and for road construction projects.  He also worked part-time at Jingle’s Stadium Bar on Monroe Street, where he made many friends who loved being teased by the bartender, “Orangie.”  Additionally, he worked part-time delivering flowers for his good friend, Oscar, at Klein’s Floral during holidays and special times of year.

He served honorably in the U.S. Marine Reserves for 12 years.

Richard enjoyed the full range of sports - playing hockey as a youngster at Vilas Park to as an adult in the “Old Timers League” at Hartmeyer Ice Arena to attending the UW Badgers home games at the Dane County Colosseum on Friday nights to teaching his granddaughter, Melissa, to play and love hockey; playing touch football at Franklin Field; camping in the wilderness; and playing golf in his later years.  Furthermore, he enjoyed fishing from setting out in a boat on Lakes Marie or Minocqua with his good friend, Oscar, to casting from the pier in Newport Beach Calif., with his nephew, John Pierre.

Richard is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann; his children, Barbara Jo, Elizabeth Doran-Flottmeyer (Lawrence) and James (Kelly Monigal); his granddaughter, Melissa; his sister, Lois Helen Schaefer; his brother, Donald Doran; and many nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Helen Doran; his brother, Clayton, his brother, James Kenneth, his sister, Geraldine Quinto, his sister, Barbara Jean Pourroy, and his brother, Robert.

A celebration of Richard’s life, a time to share good memories and love, will be held at MCFARLAND LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5529 Marsh Road, McFarland, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, 2023. Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday, with a luncheon at the church following the service. For those who are unable to attend the service, McFarland Lutheran Church will broadcast the 11 a.m. service on their Facebook Live, McFarland Lutheran Church.

Ed and I are so sad to read this, Barb. We look back fondly at our nights spent playing euchre at the end of the bar at Jingles while Orangey handled the crowd! You’re in our prayers from Colorado. ❤️ Ed and Julie Wrabetz.

Barbara Ann, "Orange" was one of the heroes who "protected us." I went to St Joseph's grade school with other "weaklings" and it was then that I/we befriended Orange, Spike, Worm,OB, Bear and others (the Milton/Charter gang). Fond and grateful memories that I will never forget. My condolences to you and the family.
